New insights into the Asian dust cycle derived from CALIPSO lidar measurements

Ying Han et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of the Asian dust cycle is crucial for evaluating the significant impact of mineral dust on human health, ecosystems, biogeochemical cycles, weather, and climate. The use of CALIOP-based detection and DustCOMM dataset has allowed for estimation of Asian dust mass loading and transport flux, providing new insights into the variability of the dust transport central axis, the contribution of desert sources, and the resulting dust budgets. These findings contribute to the validation of climate models and further evaluation of Asian dust impact on Earth systems.

Mapping anthropogenic emissions in China at 1 km spatial resolution and its application in air quality modeling

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: New challenges are emerging in fine-scale air quality modeling in China due to a lack of high-resolution emission maps. A new accurate high-resolution emission mapping approach reduces the modeled biases of air pollutant concentrations in densely populated areas, thus improving the assessment of population exposure.

Trace Elements From Ocean-Going Vessels in East Asia: Vanadium and Nickel Emissions and Their Impacts on Air Quality

Junri Zhao et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the impact of vanadium and nickel emissions from shipping on air quality in East Asia in 2015, finding that ship emissions contribute significantly to these trace metals in the region. The research shows an improvement in the model performance of predicting vanadium and nickel concentrations after including shipping emissions. The study highlights the importance of considering shipping traffic in regional air quality assessments, despite the implementation of low-sulfur fuel policies.

Changes in China's anthropogenic emissions and air quality during the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020

Bo Zheng et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 lockdowns in China led to a significant reduction in anthropogenic emissions, particularly in February 2020, with the industry sector mainly contributing to the decrease in SO2 and PM2.5 emissions. As the virus was controlled, China's emissions rebounded in the second half of 2020, reaching comparable levels to 2019.

Reviews and syntheses: The biogeochemical cycle of silicon in the modern ocean

Paul J. Treguer et al.

Summary: The element silicon is crucial for the growth of silicified organisms in marine ecosystems, connecting biogeochemical cycles of various elements. Recent studies have shown that the total silicon inputs and outputs in the ocean are significantly higher than previously estimated, leading to important modifications and updates in understanding the global silicon cycle.
