Urinary monohydroxylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the general population from 26 provincial capital cities in China: Levels, influencing factors, and health risks

Senyuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study on PAH exposure levels and influencing factors in China found that PAHs have adverse health effects, associated with sampling time, living habits, and regional economic development and energy consumption imbalances. The study also found smoking to be the main factor correlated with PAH concentrations, and inhalation and diet to be the main exposure routes. Naphthalene and phenanthrene were identified as possibly related to lung cancer risk in the Chinese population.

In Vitro Assessment Reveals the Effects of Environmentally Persistent Free Radicals on the Toxicity of Photoaged Tire Wear Particles

Ze Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics and toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) on photoaged tire wear particles (TWP), and found that the generated reactive EPFRs have adverse effects on human health. It provides important evidence for improving the risk assessment of TWP released into the environment.

Humidity induces the formation of radicals and enhances photodegradation of chlorinated-PAHs on Fe(III)-montmorillonite

Xuqiang Zhao et al.

Summary: Chlorinated-PAHs are commonly found in soil and atmospheric particles, but the mechanisms of their photodegradation are not well understood. This study monitored the formation of radicals on ClPAHs-contaminated clay minerals and explored the impact of relative humidity. The results suggest that higher humidity can facilitate the transformation and degradation of persistent free radicals and ClPAHs.

The protective layer formed by soil particles on plastics decreases the toxicity of polystyrene microplastics to earthworms (Eisenia fetida)

Jinbo Liu et al.

Summary: The recent discovery of microplastics contaminants in most ecosystems has raised major health issues, but limited knowledge exists on their impact on soil organisms. This study investigated the toxicity of polystyrene microplastics (PS-MP) to earthworms and found that the toxicity decreased with aging. It was also observed that the formation of a protective layer and increased particle size of PS-MP during soil aging contributed to the decrease in toxicity.

PM2.5 induced weight loss of mice through altering the intestinal microenvironment: Mucus barrier, gut microbiota, and metabolic profiling

Shuiping Dai et al.

Summary: Exposure to PM2.5 was found to cause weight loss in mice and disrupt gut microbiota, ileum metabolism, and liver and ileum histopathology. Specific changes were observed in the richness and function of fecal flora, as well as in the levels of key metabolites in the ileum. Analysis revealed that suppression of certain metabolic pathways and stimulation of ABC transporters might contribute to liver injury, ileum inflammation, and weight loss in mice.

Significant Contribution of Solid Organic Matter for Hydroxyl Radical Production during Oxygenation

Chenglong Yu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the production of hydroxyl radicals (.OH) from solid humic acid during oxidation. The results demonstrated that solid humic acid transferred electrons to oxygen, leading to the generation of .OH. The modeling results also confirmed that reduced solid organic matter played a significant role in .OH production.

Direct toxicity of environmentally persistent free radicals to nematode Caenorhabditis elegans after excluding the concomitant chemicals

Huijie Li et al.

Summary: Environmentally persistent free radicals (EPFRs) have attracted extensive attention due to their potential toxicity. In this study, the direct toxicity of EPFRs was confirmed by comparing systems without EPFRs, and it was found that EPFRs-containing particles exhibited significant toxicity to Caenorhabditis elegans (C. elegans), while the parent chemical and intermediate degradation products did not. EPFRs mediated the generation of reactive oxygen species and increased gene expressions related to oxidative stress, biotransformation, energy homeostasis, survival, proliferation, cell and embryonic development in C. elegans.

Ning Sun et al.

Summary: The study found that pyrene has strong biological toxicity to earthworms in soil, leading to increased mortality rate, decreased body weight, and decreased reproductive rate, as well as damage to cell membranes, DNA, and proteins. At the molecular level, pyrene inhibits the activity of antioxidant enzymes by changing the amino acid structure.

Size effects of microplastics on accumulation and elimination of phenanthrene in earthworms

Guanghui Xu et al.

Summary: Research shows that different sizes of microplastics have diverse impacts on the accumulation and elimination of organic pollutants by earthworms, with larger sizes causing more severe DNA damage and increasing the accumulation of pollutants. Additionally, nano-size microplastics significantly inhibit the bacteria responsible for degrading pollutants in earthworms, leading to higher residual concentrations of pollutants.

Deciphering the transformation mechanism of substituted polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons on Al(III)-montmorillonite: An experimental and density functional theory study

Jinsong Liu et al.

Summary: Research on the transformation of PAHs on clay minerals modified by metal ions is gaining attention. The degradation of anthracene with different substituents on Al(III)-montmorillonite was investigated, revealing a higher transformation rate for compounds with electron-donating substituents. ROS quenching experiments showed the significant role of ROS in the transformation process, while DFT calculations indicated the reactivity of PAHs derivatives is correlated with specific molecular properties.
