Biodegradation Potential of Bacillus sp. PAH-2 on PAHs for Oil-Contaminated Seawater

Xianghui Kong et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the potential and diversity of the bacterium Bacillus sp. PAH-2 in degrading polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) present in marine environments. The results demonstrated that PAH-2 showed high degradation rates against specific PAHs such as Benzo (a) anthracene (BaA), Pyrene (Pyr), and Benzo (a) pyrene (BaP). The study also highlighted the ability of PAH-2 to degrade substances with poor molecular structure stability and the potential application of PAH-2 in degrading PAHs in crude oil.

Bioremediation of oil-contaminated soil: Exploring the potential of endogenous hydrocarbon degrader Enterobacter sp. SAVR S-1

Summary: This study selected Enterobacter as a representative to investigate the degradation potential of different concentrations of TPH in soil during bioremediation. Results showed that the addition of Enterobacter increased microbial abundance and decreased TPH concentration in oil-contaminated soils. The relative abundance of potential endogenous hydrocarbon degraders also increased significantly. Genomic analysis indicated the importance of genes related to aromatic compound metabolism and fatty acid metabolism in TPH bioremediation.

Effect of nitrilotriacetic acid and tea saponin on the phytoremediation of Ni by Sudan grass (Sorghum sudanense (Piper) Stapf.) in Ni-pyrene contaminated soil

Anxing Jiao et al.

Summary: Phytoremediation is a commonly used method for remediating soils co-contaminated by heavy metals and PAHs. Sudan grass, known for its strong tolerance to heavy metals, was combined with enhancers NTA and TS to improve the efficiency of Ni-pyrene co-contaminated soil remediation. The study found that enhancers promoted Ni enrichment in plants and increased the accumulation of Ni in the cell wall. Enhancers also had positive effects on the relative abundance of certain bacteria phyla. However, the coexistence of pyrene weakened the phytoremediation process. Overall, the study provided important references for remediating co-contaminated soil.

Role of extracellular polymeric substances in the immobilization of hexavalent chromium by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 unsaturated biofilms

Hui An et al.

Summary: Microbial remediation is a promising approach for managing and restoring heavy metal-contaminated soils. This study investigated the immobilization of Cr(VI) by Shewanella putrefaciens CN32 unsaturated biofilms and explored the underlying mechanisms of Cr(VI) complexation. The results showed that Cr(VI) had a dose-dependent toxicity to the growth of unsaturated biofilms. The extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) were found to be the primary components for Cr(VI) immobilization, accounting for over 60% of the total adsorbed Cr(VI). The study also revealed that hydroxyl, carboxyl, phosphoryl, and amino functional groups in proteins and polysaccharides of EPS were the binding sites for immobilizing Cr(VI). Starved unsaturated biofilms released the EPS-bound Cr(VI) due to the depletion of EPS, which further aggravated the toxicity of Cr(VI) to the cells. This study expands our understanding of Cr(VI) immobilization by unsaturated biofilms and provides valuable information for the remediation of heavy metal-contaminated soils.

High-Affinity Sulfate Transporter Sultr1;2 Is a Major Transporter for Cr(VI) Uptake in Plants

Zhong-Rui Xu et al.

Summary: The study identified the high-affinity sulfate transporter Sultr1;2 as the major transporter responsible for Cr(VI) uptake in Arabidopsis, with Sultr1;1 playing a negligible role. Modulating the expression of Sultr1;2 can reduce the uptake rate of Cr(VI) in plants, leading to lower tissue accumulation of Cr.

Lab-scale evaluation of the microbial bioremediation of Cr(VI): contributions of biosorption, bioreduction, and biomineralization

Xiao Yan et al.

Summary: Bioremediation of Cr(VI) by microorganisms involves three main mechanisms: biosorption, bioreduction, and biomineralization. Bioreduction was found to be the major contributor to the overall removal of Cr(VI), followed by biosorption and biomineralization. High-throughput sequencing data revealed that reductive microorganisms were dominant in the microbial community and their relative abundance varied significantly.
