The BIODESERT survey: assessing the impacts of grazing on the structure andfunctioning of global drylands

Fernando T. Maestre et al.

Summary: Domestic livestock grazing is a major land use in drylands worldwide and a driver of desertification and global change. The BIODESERT survey, conducted between 2016 and 2019, is the first systematic field survey to evaluate the joint impacts of grazing by domestic livestock and climate on dryland ecosystems. The survey collected data and samples from 326 plots in 98 sites across 25 countries on 6 continents. It provides valuable baseline data for assessing the current status of dryland rangelands and the impacts of grazing, demonstrating the power of collaborative research networks in studying global ecology.

Climate warming from managed grasslands cancels the cooling effect of carbon sinks in sparsely grazed and natural grasslands

Jinfeng Chang et al.

Summary: This study examines the global trends and regional patterns of grassland greenhouse gas balance from 1750 to 2012. It found that human management activities have caused grasslands to switch from a sink to a source of greenhouse gases, while climate change drivers contributed to a net carbon sink in soil organic matter. The net radiative forcing of all grasslands is currently close to neutral, but has been increasing since the 1960s.

Global projections of the soil microbiome in the Anthropocene

Carlos A. Guerra et al.

Summary: The study found that climate change has a stronger influence on soil microbial communities compared to changes in land use, although most climate effects are indirect through other environmental variables (e.g. changes in soil pH). Predictions show an increase in alpha diversity and homogenization of soil microbial communities in the Anthropocene.

Why Coordinated Distributed Experiments Should Go Global

Laura Yahdjian et al.

Summary: This article discussed the global distribution of climatic and soil variables, and assessed the representativeness of the International Drought Experiment in parameter space. Different continents were found to have unique combinations of parameters, suggesting that experiments set up across a single continent may not capture the full extent of global variation in climate and soil parameters. A globally distributed network like IDE has the potential to address global scale hypotheses about ecosystem sensitivity to environmental change.

The impact of soil erosion on soil-related ecosystem services: development and testing a scenario-based assessment approach

Bastian Steinhoff-Knopp et al.

Summary: This study presents a scenario-based approach for assessing the impact of soil erosion on soil-related ecosystem services in agricultural landscapes, highlighting the importance of sustainable soil management. The scenarios tested in Northern Germany showed a large mitigated reduction in potential service supply for crop provision, water filtration, and water flow regulation, emphasizing the need for sustainable soil management practices.

Grazing-induced biodiversity loss impairs grassland ecosystem stability at multiple scales

Maowei Liang et al.

Summary: Livestock grazing affects grassland stability differently at different scales, increasing species stability but decreasing local community stability, ultimately reducing stability at larger spatial scales. Maintaining biodiversity across scales is crucial for the sustainability of grassland ecosystem functions and services.

Particulate organic matter as a functional soil component for persistent soil organic carbon

Summary: The study investigates the impact of soil structure on the fate of litter-derived organic matter, finding that organic matter on litter surfaces is occluded into aggregates and forms organo-mineral associations regardless of soil structure. These processes occur at plant-soil interfaces, highlighting the importance of plant litter in soil carbon persistence.

Evidence for large microbial-mediated losses of soil carbon under anthropogenic warming

Pablo Garcia-Palacios et al.

Summary: Anthropogenic warming is expected to accelerate global soil organic carbon losses, leading to increased greenhouse gas emissions and the need for more aggressive emission reduction measures to curb climate change. Studying the interactions between soil microbial communities and temperature, as well as how substrate availability affects SOC loss estimates, is crucial for improving the accuracy and precision of projected losses.

Toward a holistic understanding of pastoralism

Pablo Manzano et al.

Summary: The article proposes a transdisciplinary research approach to understand pastoralist transitions using social, economic, and environmental dimensions, diverse geographic contexts and scales, and timescales from the distant past to the present. Developing indicators within a social-ecological resilience analytical framework helps improve understanding of system transitions and supports better-informed decision making. The need for a paradigm shift in pastoralism science and policy is urgent, and the research approach, including participatory methods, can provide the necessary solutions.
