BDNF affects the mediating effect of negative symptoms on the relationship between age of onset and cognition in patients with chronic schizophrenia

Hang Xu et al.

Summary: The age of onset of schizophrenia is related to variability in cognitive function and clinical characters, where alterations in BDNF expression and the Val66Met polymorphism play a role. Early onset patients display more negative symptoms and cognitive deficits with lower BDNF levels. Negative symptoms partially mediate the relationship between onset age and cognitive deficits, which is moderated by serum BDNF levels.

The orbitofrontal cortex is necessary for learning to ignore

Kaue Machado Costa et al.

Summary: Animals are able to learn to ignore irrelevant information and recognize its importance, which is a key but often overlooked question in psychology and neuroscience. The ability to disregard irrelevant cues is evident in latent inhibition, and the orbitofrontal cortex plays an important role in this process. Experimental results demonstrate the significance of the orbitofrontal cortex in latent learning and association formation.

The Orbital Frontal Cortex, Task Structure, and Inference

Erie D. Boorman et al.

Summary: The orbital frontal cortex is involved in representing the abstracted structure of task spaces and using this representation for flexible inferences during learning and choice. Evidence from studies in animal models and humans supports the view that OFC plays a key role in flexible behaviors.
