Asplenium ruprechtii, also known as Guo Shan Jue in Chinese, is a folk medicine commonly used in northern provinces of China. It has shown a wide range of biological activities, including anti-inflammatory, hemostatic, blood circulation promoting, and pain relieving effects, based on the studies of its chemical constituents and pharmacological activities.
Asplenium ruprechtii Sa. Kurata (A. ruprechtii), in Chinese name of Guo Shan Jue, originally belonged to the genus of Camptosorus (Aspleniaceae), and now has been classified in the genus of Asplenium according to molecular evidence. As a folk medicine in northern provinces of China, it is used for anti-inflammatory, hemostasis, promoting blood circulation, dissipating blood stasis, and relieving pain. Previously, the extract of A. ruprechtii had been made into herbal medicine injections in clinics for the treatment of severe thromboangiitis obliterans. Due to its remarkable curative effect, the studies on the chemical constituents of A. ruprechtii began early in the 1970-1980s. More than eighty compounds in kinds of flavonoids, glycosides, triterpenoid saponins, and iridoid glycosides were successively isolated, which showed a wide range of biological activities. In this paper, the work on the chemical constituents and pharmacological activity studies of A. ruprechtii from 2001 to 2021 were reviewed. The summary of this manuscript will provide reference for further research and in-depth development of the A. ruprechtii.
