Effect of Confining Pressure and Strain Rate on Mechanical Behaviors and Failure Characteristics of Sandstone Containing a Pre-existing Flaw

Wei You et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamic triaxial tests were conducted on sandstone containing a pre-existing flaw under different radial confining pressures and strain rates. The results showed that both the dynamic strength and energy dissipation density of the sandstone increased with increasing radial confining pressure and strain rate. The study also characterized the fragment distributions of the sandstone and revealed the fracturing mechanism of new cracks through microscopic observation.

Stability of expansive soil slopes reinforced with anchor cables based on rotational-translational mechanisms

Yan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the stability of expansive soil slopes stabilized by pre-stressed anchor cables using the kinematic limit analysis theorem. An optimization method for the upper bound solution to slope stability was proposed and its applicability was demonstrated through comparison with published solutions. A case study was conducted to investigate the role of soil suction and anchor reinforcement in safety assessments of expansive soil slopes.

Yifei Gong et al.

Summary: A model of landslide division system has been established in the southeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, analyzing the distribution and failure modes of landslides in the area by considering rock mass structure and geo-mechanical action characteristics. By categorizing landslides into different types and defining typical failure modes, compatibility for studying the southeastern margin of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau and other regions with similar geomorphic conditions has been provided.

Kaizong Xia et al.

Summary: This study develops a method to estimate GSI and D values using acoustic wave velocity, and proposes a new method for determining the mechanical parameters of the rock mass based on these improved values. The analysis results show that the method accurately reflects the factors affecting rock mass quality and disturbance, and its reliability is verified in practical engineering.

Assessing the Stability of Dip Slopes Based on Analyzing the Stress at a Key Point on the Sliding Surface

Chaoyi Sun et al.

Summary: A novel method for assessing the potential of a dip slope to undergo bi-planar failure is proposed in this study. Discrete-element simulations and stress analysis are conducted to investigate the characteristics of the penetration process of the sliding surface and to assess the stability of the slope. The results show the feasibility and accuracy of the proposed method and reveal the progressive bi-planar failure process and its location in the stress reduction zone.

Investigation on the mechanism and control methods for roof collapse caused by cable bolt shear rupture

Wen-da Wu et al.

Summary: The study investigated the roof collapse accident at the No.15028 tailgate of XinJing coal mine in China, finding that insufficient pretension load on rock bolts led to horizontal displacement and vertical separation of rocks, ultimately causing roof collapse. Increasing the pretension load of rock bolts and developing mechanically compatible support systems can effectively reduce horizontal displacement of rocks and shear fracture risk of cable bolts.

Numerical simulations of the failure process of anaclinal slope physical model and control mechanism of negative Poisson's ratio cable

Chun Zhu et al.

Summary: Researchers have established a numerical model and developed a numerical simulation model of NPR cables to simulate the slope failure process and the impact of cables on deformation. The numerical results show that NPR cables can absorb deformation energy and maintain stable resistance, preventing slope instability and driving the slope towards a new equilibrium state.

Analysis of Stability of Concealed Cataclinal Slopes with Talus Deposits Accumulated at Their Toes with Respect to Biplanar Failure

Chaoyi Sun et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the stability and biplanar failure of concealed cataclinal slopes with talus deposits accumulated at their toes (TDAT-CC slopes), proposing a new method to determine slope stability and predict failure surface. It was found that talus deposits at the toe of the slope act as a toe buttress improving slope stability, with the safety factor increasing as the inclination and height of the deposits increase. The results obtained offer a solid foundation for investigating biplanar failure in TDAT-CC slopes.

Dynamic analysis of anti-dip bedding rock slopes reinforced by pre-stressed cables using discrete element method

Yun Zheng et al.

Summary: Pre-stressed cables were found to be an effective method in controlling deformation and improving dynamic stability of ABRSs in earthquakes. Both reinforced and unreinforced ABRSs showed significant acceleration amplification from half of the slope height upwards. It is recommended to use a slight cable inclination and high pre-stressed force in seismic reinforcement design for ABRSs.
