Quantifying relationships between subsidence and longwall face advance using DInSAR

Bailey S. Simmons et al.

Summary: Monitoring subsidence caused by longwall mining through a variety of techniques can help establish relationships between surface deformation and longwall face advance. Differential Interferometric Synthetic Aperture Radar (DInSAR) provides data with long temporal coverage for subsidence monitoring.

Geophysical investigations for stability and safety mitigation of regional crude-oil pipeline near abandoned coal mines

B. Butchibabu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to protect a shallowly buried crude-oil pipeline against environmental hazards and theft. Geophysical techniques, both surface and borehole, were used to map vulnerable zones and revealed the presence of voids, cavities, and weak zones below the pipeline, leading to possible instability and subsidence in the overburden near the pipeline.

A New Theoretical Method to Predict Strata Movement and Surface Subsidence due to Inclined Coal Seam Mining

Yunjiang Sun et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new theoretical method for predicting strata movement and surface subsidence caused by inclined coal seam mining. By considering the influence of key strata, rock quality, and coal seam dip angle, three models are introduced to describe strata movement. The theoretical predictions of surface subsidence are validated through numerical simulations and field measurements, showing significant improvement over empirical methods.

High-intensity longwall mining-induced ground subsidence in Shendong coalfield, China

Jingmin Xu et al.

Summary: This study conducted field monitoring of longwall mining-induced ground subsidence in Shendong coalfield, China, and revealed the dynamic characteristics of ground subsidence under different mining conditions. Results showed that the subsidence ratio is higher for longwall panels with a width to depth ratio closer to 1.35-1.6, with maximum subsidence speed reaching 0.4 m/day.
