Increased interglacial atmospheric CO2 levels followed the mid-Pleistocene Transition

Masanobu Yamamoto et al.

Summary: Atmospheric CO2 and polar ice volume have a strong coupling over the past 805,000 years. However, the extent of coupling during times of lower-amplitude ice-volume variability is unknown due to the lack of continuous high-resolution CO2 records. By utilizing the relationship between CO2 concentration and leaf-wax delta C-13 resulting from changes in vegetation in East India, we reconstructed the atmospheric CO2 for the past 1,460,000 years. The findings suggest that deep-ocean circulation controlled the long-term CO2 trend and the interaction between CO2, continental ice, and deep-ocean circulation was reorganized during the mid-Pleistocene Transition.

Glacial isostatic adjustment in the Red Sea: Impact of 3-D Earth structure

Barra A. Peak et al.

Summary: Sea-level history in the Red Sea region is influenced by both global mean sea level and glacial isostatic adjustment. Three-dimensional Earth models show that the presence of the Red Sea Rift and low-viscosity upper mantle amplify sea-level rise, resulting in different effects at different locations. Coastal sites experience sea-level fall, while sites near the rift experience sea-level rise.

Cenozoic evolution of deep ocean temperature from clumped isotope thermometry

A. N. Meckler et al.

Summary: Characterizing past climate states is crucial for understanding the future consequences of ongoing greenhouse gas emissions. This study revisits the benchmark time series for deep ocean temperature across the past 65 million years and finds that the deep Atlantic Ocean was overall much warmer compared to previous reconstructions. The results also reveal previously unrecognized large swings in deep ocean temperature during the early Eocene period. This calls for a reassessment of the Cenozoic history of ocean temperatures to achieve a more accurate understanding of climatic responses to tectonic events and greenhouse forcing.

Rapid retreat of Thwaites Glacier in the pre-satellite era

Alastair G. C. Graham et al.

Similar rapid retreat pulses are likely to occur in the near future when the grounding zone migrates back off stabilizing high points on the sea floor.

Sea-level change, palaeotidal modelling and hominin dispersals: The case of the southern red sea

Jon Hill et al.

Summary: This study examines the possibility of early human sea crossings in the southern Red Sea during the Pleistocene. Through simulation of tidal flows and passive movements, it is found that the distances of sea crossings were shorter during the Pleistocene. The strongest tidal currents were observed near the islands in the Hanish sill region, suggesting a higher chance of successful crossing.

Compilation of Last Interglacial (Marine Isotope Stage 5e) sea-level indicators in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the east coast of Florida, USA

Andrea Dutton et al.

Summary: This paper summarizes the sea-level archives of the Last Interglacial sea-level highstand in the Bahamas, Turks and Caicos, and the eastern coast of Florida, USA. The data were compiled as part of the World Atlas of Last Interglacial Shorelines (WALIS) database. The archives include depositional and erosional features as indicators of past sea-level position, such as corals, oolites, and other coastal sedimentary features. Uncertainties in estimating sea-level position range from decimeters to meters due to stratigraphic evidence of multiple sea-level oscillations. The compiled database is available at https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.5596898 (Dutton et al., 2021).

Organic carbon burial in Mediterranean sapropels intensified during Green Sahara Periods since 3.2 Myr ago

Katharine M. Grant et al.

Summary: Dark organic-rich layers have accumulated in Mediterranean sediments since the Miocene. Through studying high-resolution geochemical and environmental magnetic records, it is found that organic burial intensified 3.2 million years ago, possibly due to a sudden nonlinear change in the environment of North Africa. This finding is of great significance for understanding environmental evolution.

Pliocene-Pleistocene glacimarine shelf to slope processes in the south-western Barents Sea

Dicky Harishidayat et al.

Summary: The glacimarine shelf-edge is a complex depositional environment influenced by the interplay between accommodation and glaciation. This study presents an integrated workflow for deciphering the architecture and evolution of erosional and depositional elements in the south-western Barents Sea margin during the Pliocene and Early Pleistocene. The results have implications for understanding the glacial history of the south-western Barents Sea and sedimentary processes on glacimarine shelf edges more generally.

Environmental change during the last glacial on an ancient land bridge of southeast Australia

Matthew Adesanya Adeleye et al.

Summary: The study reconstructed vegetation, fire regimes, and lake levels changes on the Bassian Land Bridge during the Last Glacial Maximum using pollen, charcoal, and non-pollen palynomorph analysis. Results showed a major shift in vegetation with grassland expanding at the expense of woodland and dryland herbaceous taxa dispersed between the mainland and Tasmania during periods of low sea levels when the land bridge was fully exposed. The findings suggest that the prevailing environment on the land bridge had a selective influence on biotic dispersals in Australia during glacial periods.

Evidence for a Northern Hemispheric trigger of the 100,000-y glacial cyclicity

Maayan Yehudai et al.

Summary: Studies suggest that a period of intense erosion affecting the cratonic shields surrounding the North Atlantic between Marine Isotope Stages 27 and 25 may have been responsible for a major ocean circulation weakening between MIS 25 and 21, coinciding with the onset of 100-ky interglacial-glacial cycles in the Northern Hemisphere. This erosion may have been induced through regolith loss and increased exposure of the crystalline bedrock, enabling larger ice sheets characteristic of the 100-ky cycles.

Roles of insolation forcing and CO2 forcing on Late Pleistocene seasonal sea surface temperatures

Kyung Eun Lee et al.

Summary: New research on changes in sea surface temperatures in the East China Sea over the past 400,000 years reveals phase differences between annual mean and summer temperatures, especially during interglacial periods. Climate changes are influenced by seasonal insolation variations and CO2 concentrations, with temperature shifts during glacial terminations showing significant differences between summer and winter temperatures. This study highlights the importance of considering proxy seasonality and seasonal climate variability when estimating climate sensitivity.

Early-warning signals for Cenozoic climate transitions

Christopher Boettner et al.

Summary: Deep-time paleoclimatic records show that large-scale shifts in Earth's climate are often driven by bifurcations in leading dynamical modes. Characteristic early-warning signals, such as rising standard deviation and lag-one autocorrelation, precede critical transitions. These signals have been detected in the Cenozoic Era paleoclimate record, indicating that bifurcations may play a key role in major climate events over the last 66 million years.

Summary: The Eocene-Oligocene transition marked a shift from a largely ice-free greenhouse world to an icehouse climate, primarily driven by a decrease in atmospheric CO2 and changes to ocean gateways, with possible influence from orbital forcing. Model ensemble results suggest that a significant decrease in CO2 was the main driver of global glaciation growth.
