Physiology can predict animal activity, exploration, and dispersal

Nicholas C. Wu et al.

Summary: Physiological traits influence individual movement and differences in physiological characteristics between range edges and cores may be associated with dispersal success. However, the results may be biased due to undersampling.

Applications of telemetry to fish habitat science and management

Jacob W. Brownscombe et al.

Summary: Telemetry has great potential for fish habitat science and management, but its utilization in this field is not sufficient due to the focus on fish movement rather than habitat selection and the scale differences between telemetry data and management decisions. The adoption of inferential study approaches and more extensive measurement of environmental conditions would be valuable in improving the application of telemetry to fish habitat science.

Global trends in aquatic animal tracking with acoustic telemetry

Jordan K. Matley et al.

Summary: Acoustic telemetry (AT) is an important tool for tracking aquatic animal movements, but there is a need for more research with direct relevance to management. Collaboration, long-term monitoring, and technological advancements are key priorities for optimizing AT research and enhancing aquatic policy and ecological understanding globally.

Physiological state predicts space use of sharks at a tourism provisioning site

Bianca S. Rangel et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between physiological condition and space use of tiger sharks exposed to dive tourism provisioning. The results show that non-gravid female tiger sharks with higher plasma steroid levels, enriched delta N-15, and elevated nutritional status spend more time at food provisioning sites.

Migration and apparent survival of post-spawning alewife (Alosa pseudoharengus) in Minas Basin, Bay of Fundy

Elizabetha Tsitrin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the migration process of anadromous alewives from Gaspereau River to Minas Basin. Through tagging and detection, it was found that most alewives would leave the river and enter the basin within two days of tagging. In Minas Basin, the alewives experienced significant tidal influences and fast displacements. The average residence time in Minas Basin was calculated to be 28 days. It was also observed that the alewives might be exposed to in-stream tidal turbines during their migration.

The use of non-lethal sampling for transcriptomics to assess the physiological status of wild fishes

Ken M. Jeffries et al.

Summary: Fishes respond to stressors through changes in gene expression, and transcriptomics has been widely used to study their responses. Non-lethal sampling for transcriptomics should be the norm for assessing the physiological status of wild fishes. Telemetry combined with transcriptional profiling is a powerful tool for non-lethal sampling in wild fishes.

Atlantic sturgeon presence in a designated marine hydrokinetic test site prior to turbine deployment: A baseline study

Jessie Lilly et al.

Summary: The study used acoustic tagging technology to investigate the presence of Atlantic sturgeon in the FORCE sites and showed that a significant portion of tagged sturgeon were detected in those areas. Tide type was found to be the only significant predictor of sturgeon depth and presence in the FORCE sites.

A standardisation framework for bio-logging data to advance ecological research and conservation

Ana M. M. Sequeira et al.

Summary: The study emphasizes the importance of a standardization framework to ensure discoverability, interoperability, and effective translation of bio-logging data for addressing global conservation challenges. By using simple templates and automated procedures, data can be transformed into four standardized levels, facilitating data sharing, interoperability, accuracy-of-use, rightful attribution, and data preservation security. Adoption of this framework will support the collection of Essential Ocean Variables and inter-governmental assessments, and establish a starting point for broader efforts in establishing interoperable bio-logging data formats across all fields in animal ecology.

South African marine citizen science - benefits, challenges and future directions

W. M. Potts et al.

Summary: South Africa has a long history of engagement in citizen science, particularly in the marine field. Marine citizen science has made significant contributions to marine scientific research, both through large-scale projects and individual scientists. It helps popularize science and improve scientific literacy, but faces challenges of funding and limited participation in developing countries.

The consequences of dam passage for downstream-migrating American eel in the Penobscot River, Maine

Matthew A. Mensinger et al.

Summary: American eels passing through hydropower dams in the Penobscot River in Maine, USA face lower survival rates and higher mortality risks compared to undammed river sections. The fish also experience long delays at dams, especially under low flow conditions which exacerbate the risks of mortality and delay.
