Binary alkali-activated systems obtained by the valorisation of calcined kaolin sludge and bottom ash

Marlon A. Longhi et al.

Summary: This study assesses the potential of using industrial wastes from mining and thermal power stations as raw materials to produce geopolymers. The results show that using kaolinitic sludge as the main precursor blend can result in geopolymer with better mechanical properties, and the content of soluble silicates in the activator plays a crucial role in improving mechanical properties.

Influence of the availability of calcium on the hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C3A) in seawater-mixed C3A-gypsum system

Yamei Cai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of seawater on the hydration of tricalcium aluminate (C(3)A). The results showed that seawater accelerated the early hydration of C(3)A but delayed the hydration at later ages. Additionally, the presence of Ca(OH)(2) increased the hydration degree of C(3)A.

Utilization of APC residues from sewage sludge incineration process as activator of alkali-activated slag/glass powder material

Keke Sun et al.

Summary: This study utilized APC residues and solid sodium silicate as activators to prepare alkali-activated materials, discussing their impact on mechanical properties and reaction mechanisms. Results showed that APC residues reduced early compressive strength but improved later strength, and reduced drying shrinkage when incorporated. Various crystalline materials were detected in the alkali-activated slag/GP after the addition of APC residues.

Effect of seawater as mixing water on the hydration behaviour of tricalcium aluminate

Yamei Cai et al.

Summary: This study found that seawater delayed the hydration of C3A by contaminating reactive sites on its surface with co-existing Ca2+ and SO42-, as well as prolonging the induction period with precipitation of Mg(OH)2. Cl-was observed to preferentially react with C3A to form Friedel's salt, leading to an accumulation of Al3+ in solution and hindering further dissolution of C3A.

Reuse of waste glass powder in alkali-activated metakaolin/fly ash pastes: Physical properties, reaction kinetics and microstructure

Guangwei Liang et al.

Summary: The reaction of waste glass powder in geopolymerization process enhances the mechanical properties of alkali-activated material (AAM) pastes, especially at the 20% substitution level of waste glass powder. The reactive components in waste glass powder accelerate the geopolymerization process, resulting in the formation of additional binder gels and denser microstructure.

Summary: This study focuses on the alkali activation reaction and alkali-silica reaction in alkali activated cement using glass powder and glass cullet as main materials. It was found that by incorporating different powder materials such as ground granulated blast furnace slag and calcium aluminate cement, the properties of the alkali activated cement can be controlled. Additionally, the effects of different material dosages on the properties of alkali activated cement were further investigated.

Roles of chlorine and sulphate in MSWIFA in GGBFS binder: Hydration, mechanical properties and stabilization considerations

Pengfei Ren et al.

Summary: The study showed that chlorine in MSWIFA can be easily washed out, while the removal of sulphate depended on the liquid to solid ratio; GGBFS can be better activated by low L/S washed-MSWIFA and the presence of C-S-H played a key role in long-term strength development. The main hydration products of the activated binders were C-S-H, AFt and Friedel's salt, and leaching tests demonstrated that the activated GGBFS binders were harmless to the environment.
