Heat stress during the transition period is associated with impaired production, reproduction, and survival in dairy cows

P. R. Menta et al.

Summary: The objective of this retrospective cohort study was to determine the impact of heat stress exposure during the periparturient period on production, health, reproduction, and survival of dairy cows in the first 90 days postpartum. The results showed that postpartum heat stress had a greater negative effect on performance than pre-partum heat stress, and both nulliparous and parous cows were susceptible to losses associated with heat stress during the transition period.

Carry-over effects of dry period heat stress on the mammary gland proteome and phosphoproteome in the subsequent lactation of dairy cows

Amy L. Skibiel et al.

Summary: Exposure to heat stress during dry period impairs mammary gland remodeling and function, leading to decreased milk production during lactation. This study investigated the proteomic and phosphoproteomic changes in the lactating mammary gland as a result of dry period heat stress, revealing the molecular mechanisms underlying disrupted mammary function and health.

Effects of Exposure to Heat Stress During Late Gestation on the Daily Time Budget of Nulliparous Holstein Heifers

Izabella M. Toledo et al.

Summary: Exposure of dairy cows to heat stress negatively affects their welfare and performance, resulting in decreased milk and reproductive performance, reduced immune status and health, and altered natural behaviors. The effects of late gestation heat stress on pregnant heifers are still unknown. This study investigates the behavioral activity of heifers during the pre- and postpartum periods and finds that heat-stressed heifers show changes in their activities and behavior.

Heat stress affects the expression of key genes in the placenta, placental characteristics, and efficiency of Saanen goats and the survival and growth of their kids

P. S. Silva et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the effects of heat stress during final gestation on cortisol concentration, placenta characteristics, and gene expression in goats. Heat stress increased rectal temperature, respiratory frequency, and cortisol levels, as well as altered gene expression related to placenta in the heat-stressed goats. While there was no significant difference in survival or birth weights, kids from heat-stressed goats had higher mortality rates at weaning and altered cortisol signaling, suggesting a lasting effect of heat stress on goat offspring.

Effects of late-gestation heat stress independent of reduced feed intake on colostrum, metabolism at calving, and milk yield in early lactation of dairy cows

S. M. M. Seyed Almoosavi et al.

Summary: The study aimed to differentiate the effects of acute heat stress and decreased dry matter intake during the prepartum period on metabolism, colostrum, and subsequent production of dairy cows. Results showed that heat stress during late gestation caused metabolism and production differences in dairy cows, which were only partially attributed to reduced feed intake.

Endocrine Signals Altered by Heat Stress Impact Dairy Cow Mammary Cellular Processes at Different Stages of the Dry Period

Veronique Ouellet et al.

Summary: Late-gestation heat stress alters gene expression in the mammary gland, impacting key cellular processes and potentially disrupting mammary gland remodelling by modulating estrogen and prolactin signalling, leading to reduced milk yield in the subsequent lactation. Further research is needed to uncover the mechanisms behind production impairments caused by late-gestation heat stress.

The Autumn Low Milk Yield Syndrome in High Genetic Merit Dairy Cattle: The Possible Role of a Dysregulated Innate Immune Response

Massimo Amadori et al.

Summary: Milk production worldwide is dominated by a few cosmopolitan dairy cattle breeds, which have shown significant improvement in hygiene standards but have long been accompanied by animal health and welfare issues. Hot summer climate plays a central role in causing various diseases and early cull in dairy herds. High genetic merit dairy cows do not fully express their production potential in autumn, possibly due to metabolic stress and inflammatory response in the dry and peripartum periods. This study highlights harmful factors that could affect dairy cows during transition periods, such as hot summer climate, adverse genetic traits, and poor coping with unfavorable environmental conditions.

Maternal Heat Stress Alters Expression of Genes Associated with Nutrient Transport Activity and Metabolism in Female Placentae from Mid-Gestating Pigs

Weicheng Zhao et al.

Summary: Maternal heat stress during early to mid-gestation in pigs leads to differential gene expression in the placenta, affecting placental efficiency and nutrient transport capacity. This study indicates that altered expression of genes associated with placental metabolism and transport may contribute to heat stress-induced placental inefficiency.

Across-generation effects of maternal heat stress during late gestation on production, female fertility and longevity traits in dairy cows

Cordula Kipp et al.

Summary: This research paper focuses on the time-lagged heat stress effects from an across-generation perspective, observing that heat stress during late pregnancy can have unfavorable impacts on the offspring's production, fertility, and longevity traits, especially when THI >= 50 and THI >= 60. The study suggests providing heat stress abatement measures to late gestation dams to avoid long-term adverse effects on the offspring.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of cow-related factors on the rectal temperature and respiration rate of lactating dairy cows under different heat stress conditions. The results showed that body posture, milk yield, days in milk, and parity had significant impacts on the parameters measured.
