Sentinel-1-Based Water and Flood Mapping: Benchmarking Convolutional Neural Networks Against an Operational Rule-Based Processing Chain

Max Helleis et al.

Summary: This study compared the effectiveness of various convolutional neural network architectures in water and flood mapping using Sentinel-1 amplitude data, evaluating their performance globally and enhancing their generalization capacity through model training for flood events. The models trained on data without distinct inundation showed excellent performance in mapping water extent during flood events and performed well on the Sen1Floods11 dataset.

Flood Uncertainty Estimation Using Deep Ensembles

Priyanka Chaudhary et al.

Summary: We propose a probabilistic deep learning approach to predict maximum water depth hazard maps at high spatial resolutions, providing well-calibrated uncertainty estimates for each prediction. Our method learns the underlying phenomena from simulated hydrodynamic data, eliminating the need for manual parameter setting at test time and increasing the model's trustworthiness during flooding events.

Illustrative Discussion of MC-Dropout in General Dataset: Uncertainty Estimation in Bitcoin

Ismail Alarab et al.

Summary: The study discusses the behavior of MC-dropout in classification tasks, involving empirical research using synthetic and real data. Specifically, MC-dropout performs well in dealing with data points on the decision boundary. When applied to the Elliptic dataset, the MC-dropout method demonstrates superior performance over the standard model.

Bayesian LSTM With Stochastic Variational Inference for Estimating Model Uncertainty in Process-Based Hydrological Models

Dayang Li et al.

Summary: The study shows that by combining a residual error model based on deep learning with process-based hydrological models, better estimates of uncertainty in catchment modeling can be achieved. In the comparison of two catchments in China, the Bayesian LSTM method provides superior uncertainty estimates compared to the Bayesian linear regression model.

Enhancement of Detecting Permanent Water and Temporary Water in Flood Disasters by Fusing Sentinel-1 and Sentinel-2 Imagery Using Deep Learning Algorithms: Demonstration of Sen1Floods11 Benchmark Datasets

Yanbing Bai et al.

Summary: This study proposes a deep learning algorithm and a multi-source data fusion driven flood inundation mapping approach using a large-scale publicly available dataset. The proposed method automatically segments surface water, permanent water, and temporary water, and is shown to be effective through thorough experiments and analysis. The model achieves high accuracy in flood detection and shows good generalization ability.
