Combining transfer learning and hyperspectral reflectance analysis to assess leaf nitrogen concentration across different plant species datasets

Liang Wan et al.

Summary: In this study, we propose a new transfer learning method called TCA-SVR to transfer leaf nitrogen concentration (LNC) assessment models across different plant species. By analyzing five remote sensing datasets, we find that combining visible, near infrared, and shortwave infrared reflectance achieves the optimal LNC assessment across all datasets. Compared to the established PLSR model, TCA-SVR greatly improves the transferability of the LNC assessment model and further improves performance through model updating.

Assessing a soil-removed semi-empirical model for estimating leaf chlorophyll content

Dong Li et al.

Summary: Leaf chlorophyll content (LCC) is a crucial indicator of nitrogen status and photosynthetic capacity. A recent study developed a simple model, called LAI-insensitive chlorophyll index (LICI), to accurately estimate LCC. They also proposed an automatic algorithm to separate soil and vegetation, which improved the accuracy of LICI measurements. The results showed that the soil-removed LICI-based model had high accuracy and generality for LCC estimation across various vegetation types, years, and sites.

An overview of crop nitrogen status assessment using hyperspectral remote sensing: Current status and perspectives

Yuanyuan Fu et al.

Summary: Nitrogen is closely related to crop photosynthetic capacity, and over-and-under-application of N fertilizers can lead to negative impacts on both crop productivity and the environment. Hyperspectral remote sensing, particularly using vegetation indices and machine learning algorithms, has emerged as a cost-effective alternative for determining crop N status. Further exploration of deep learning algorithms in this field is needed for more accurate assessment.

Hyperspectral imagery to monitor crop nutrient status within and across growing seasons

Nanfeng Liu et al.

Summary: Imaging spectroscopy is a valuable tool for monitoring nutrient status and predicting yield of potatoes across cultivars, growth stages, and growing seasons. Ordinary least-squares regression models showed poor predictions, while partial least-squares regression models performed well using different spectral regions. Cross-season models exhibited some bias and require further optimization.

Summary: This study developed season-specific and spectral-region-specific 1D-CNN models using deep learning techniques for timely and accurate estimation of canopy nitrogen concentration. Results showed that the 1D-CNN model exhibited higher accuracy on the independent validation dataset, while the full spectral range model outperformed the spectral region-specific models in terms of accuracy.
