Monthly mapping of forest harvesting using dense time series Sentinel-1 SAR imagery and deep learning

Feng Zhao et al.

Summary: Compared with disturbance maps produced at annual or multi-year time steps, monthly mapping of forest harvesting using Sentinel-1 data provides more temporal details and can be used to study the socio-economic drivers and characterize the intra-annual dynamics of carbon and hydrology. A deep learning-based approach (U-Net) using the landscape pattern from Sentinel-1 data was proposed in this study to produce monthly maps of forest harvesting in California, USA and Rondonia, Brazil. The results showed that this approach is reliable and outperforms traditional object-based methods, with the potential to assist in sustainable forest management strategies.

Large-scale automatic identification of urban vacant land using semantic segmentation of high-resolution remote sensing images

Lingdong Mao et al.

Summary: Urban vacant land is a global issue, and most research has focused on small-scale city areas. This study proposes a large-scale automatic identification framework based on high-resolution remote sensing images to address the challenges of cost and variability. The framework achieves high accuracy and efficiency compared to the manual identification method, and maintains strong performance in different cities.

Changes in nonlinearity and stability of streamflow recession characteristics under climate warming in a large glaciated basin of the Tibetan Plateau

Jiarong Wang et al.

Summary: The accelerated climate warming in the Tibetan Plateau after 1997 has had profound consequences on hydrology, geography, and social wellbeing. This study analyzes the annual streamflow recession characteristics in the Yarlung Zangbo River basin of the southern Tibetan Plateau, and finds that climate warming has significantly affected the nonlinearity of the streamflow response and stability in most subbasins. These changes are attributed to increased water storage and lengthened recession timescales due to accelerated glacier melting and permafrost thawing.

Trends in flow intermittence for European rivers

Yves Tramblay et al.

Summary: Intermittent rivers are common in Europe, with increasing numbers of zero-flow days observed, particularly in southern Europe. Local catchment properties have a significant impact on the seasonal patterns of intermittence and zero-flow days. The SPEI is strongly related to the occurrence of zero-flow days at most stations, while there is a weaker dependence on large-scale circulation indices.

Basin-scale high-resolution extraction of drainage networks using 10-m Sentinel-2 imagery

Zifeng Wang et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new method named Remote Sensing Stream Burning (RSSB) for high-resolution extraction of drainage networks using Sentinel-2 satellite data, enabling detailed representation of meanders and network connections. The method allows multitemporal extraction of river networks during different seasons and before/after formation of new channels, providing accurate and realistic data for further research on inland water and Earth system components.

Summary: The study introduces a new adaptive, multi-scale region growth method (AMRGM) for delineating river networks from satellite images, which can handle rivers of different scales and curvatures. Evaluation shows that AMRGM achieves high accuracy rates of over 97%, especially performing well on large rivers.

Global prevalence of non-perennial rivers and streams

Mathis Loic Messager et al.

Summary: Flowing waters play a crucial role in supporting global biodiversity, biogeochemical cycles, and human societies. However, the prevalence and significance of non-perennial rivers and streams are often overlooked, contributing to the degradation of water sources and livelihoods. By analyzing global data, it was found that a significant portion of the world's rivers experience at least one day of flow cessation each year, challenging traditional river concepts and highlighting the importance of considering intermittence in river management.
