Data-driven Bayes approach on marine accidents occurring in Istanbul strait

Bunyamin Kamal et al.

Summary: This study investigates vessel accidents in the Istanbul Strait and utilizes a data-driven Bayesian Network approach to find that small vessels, especially those under 300 GRT, are more prone to drifting accidents, which are the most frequent type of accidents in the Istanbul Strait.

Know your safety indicator - A determination of merchant vessels Bow Crossing Range based on big data analytics

Mateusz Gil et al.

Summary: Even in the era of automatization, maritime safety constantly needs improvements. This paper investigates the typical values and factors influencing the Bow Crossing Range (BCR) during routine operations of merchant ships using a large dataset of real maritime traffic. The results indicate that BCR is strongly related to the type of navigational area and not with the dimensions or speed of ships. The findings of this study are important for fleet managers and developers of Maritime Autonomous Surface Ships (MASS).

Rule discovery to identify patterns contributing to overrepresentation and severity of run-off-the-road crashes

Alfonso Montella et al.

Summary: This study analyzed 6167 crashes that occurred on a section of the A16 motorway in Italy from 2001 to 2011, identifying 94 significant rules for run-off-the-road crashes and 129 significant rules for severe and fatal injury crashes. The rules represent combinations of factors associated with the overrepresentation of frequency and severity of these crashes, highlighting the need for a combination of countermeasures to address safety issues.

Investigation of tugboat accidents severity: An application of association rule mining algorithms

Erkan Cakir et al.

Summary: The study revealed that tugboats aged over 20 years are crucial indicators for serious accidents, with hull/machinery damage and collision type accidents constituting more than half of the total tugboat accidents. Association rule mining showed that four of the five rules for serious accidents are attributed to hull/machinery damage.

Patterns of near-crash events in a naturalistic driving dataset: Applying rules mining

Xiaoqiang Kong et al.

Summary: This study investigated the associations between near-crash events and road geometry and trip features using the Apriori algorithm. Near-crash events were classified into trivial and non-trivial events, with several factors found to be highly associated with near-crash events, such as roadway characteristics and speed limits. Results showed that non-trivial near-crash events were more likely to occur on longer trips exceeding 2 hours.

Application of the HFACS-PV approach for identification of human and organizational factors (HOFs) influencing marine accidents

Serdar Yildiz et al.

Summary: Shipping is a leading mode of transport in the world economy, with maritime safety closely related to effectiveness and efficiency of maritime trade. The complexity of human factors poses a challenge in fully analyzing accidents, and this research aims to demonstrate the feasibility of using the HFACS-PV system for various types of accidents. Results show that the HFACS-PV structure is adaptable for different maritime accidents, allowing for coherent analysis.
