Synthesis and characterization of phosphorus-based flame retardant containing rigid polyurethane foam

Esra Caliskan et al.

Summary: The novel compound BHAPPO showed effective flame retardant properties for polyurethane foam, with a confirmed synergistic effect when combined with ammonium polyphosphate (APP). The combination of BHAPPO and APP was found to have a dependency in reducing flammability and enhancing char formation of the foam.

Synthesis and characterization of flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams derived from gutter oil biodiesel

Guangxu Bo et al.

Summary: The study successfully synthesized gutter oil biodiesel-based polyols (GOBP) and a reactive-type flame retardant named diethyl bis(2-hydroxyethyl)-aminomethylphosphonate (BHAPE), and prepared flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foams (BPUFs) using these materials. The BPUFs showed promising properties such as low density, low thermal conductivity, high compressive strength, good flame retardancy, and thermal stability, making them potential biomaterials for fire insulation porous materials in future architecture applications.

Natural Oil-Based Rigid Polyurethane Foam Thermal Insulation Applicable at Cryogenic Temperatures

Katarzyna Uram et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the use of bio-polyols from rapeseed and tall oil to prepare rigid polyurethane foams for cryogenic insulation applications in aerospace. The study shows that replacing non-renewable diethylene glycol with low functional polyol obtained from rapeseed oil led to an increase in foam density. Additionally, the mechanical tests demonstrated that the rigid polyurethane foam had higher compressive strength at cryogenic temperatures compared to room temperature, making it a promising material for low-temperature applications.

Self-extinguishing and transparent epoxy resin modified by a phosphine oxide-containing bio-based derivative

Gang Tang et al.

Summary: A bio-based curing agent containing phosphine oxide was synthesized and confirmed to improve the flame retardancy of epoxy composites, achieving UL-94 V-0 rating and a good limiting oxygen index. The use of the bio-based curing agent reduces the glass transition temperature of the composites, as well as decreasing the heat release rate and total heat release.

Autocatalytic reactive flame retardants for rigid polyurethane foams

Muradulla Hamidov et al.

Summary: This study presents an innovative concept of autocatalytic reactive flame retardants (ACRFRs) for polyurethanes. The synthesized ACRFRs showed good catalytic activity and moderate flame retardancy, depending on the type and concentration. It is believed that more ACRFRs will be synthesized in the future and find applications in industrial settings.

Flame retardant flexible polyurethane foams based on phosphorous soybean-oil polyol and expandable graphite

Yin Yam Chan et al.

Summary: An alternative phosphorous soybean-oil-based polyol was used for flexible polyurethane foams synthesis, with the addition of 5% and 10% expandable graphite (EG) to improve flame retardancy. The combination of phosphorous polyols and EG showed significantly enhanced flame retardancy, with a three times increase in char yield, indicating a potential strategy for future flame retarded FPUFs.

Phosphorus-containing soybean oil-derived polyols for flame-retardant and smoke-suppressant rigid polyurethane foams

Gang Tang et al.

Summary: A bio-based flame-retardant polyol (PESO) was developed for rigid polyurethane foams (RPUFs), improving the flame-retardant property without significant impact on thermal conductivity and thermal stability. The addition of PESO promoted charring ability of the polymer matrix, forming a protective barrier layer to suppress heat release and smoke emission during combustion.

Identification and Evaluation of Hazardous Pyrolysates in Bio-Based Rigid Polyurethane-Polyisocyanurate Foam Smoke

Sanita Reinerte et al.

Summary: This study analyzed rigid polyurethane (PU) and polyisocyanurate (PIR) foam samples made from renewable material through pyrolysis gas chromatography mass spectrometry (Py-GC/MS). The main thermal degradation components were found to originate from the decomposition of isocyanate, forming suspected carcinogens and mutagens. The focus was on identifying and evaluating the relative quantities of the produced gaseous products and examining their hazardousness.

Effect of flame retardants on mechanical and thermal properties of bio-based polyurethane rigid foams

Qirui Gong et al.

Summary: In this study, a soy oil-based polyol (HSBP), a phosphorus-containing flame retardant (DOPO-HSBP), and a nitrogen-containing flame retardant (T-D) were synthesized and used to prepare flame-retardant rigid polyurethane foam. It was found that the flame retardant properties of the rigid polyurethane foam were greatly improved with increasing DOPO-HSBP content, and when DOPO-HSBP and T-D were added, the LOI value of the foam significantly increased to 25.5 and achieved a UL-94 classification of V-0, with minimal impact on mechanical properties.
