A review on hollow fiber membrane module towards high separation efficiency: Process modeling in fouling perspective

Xianhui Li et al.

Summary: This review provides a comprehensive overview of the development of hollow fiber MF/UF membrane filtration models, highlighting the lack of research on the interactions between membrane fouling and local filtration hydrodynamics. It suggests the need for simplified models to represent the actual filtration behavior of hollow fiber membranes, taking into account complex hydrodynamics and membrane properties for accurate prediction of membrane filtration performance.

Environmental applications of graphene oxide composite membranes

Yihua Li et al.

Summary: Graphene oxide (GO) composite membranes have been widely used in membrane modification due to their excellent properties, such as huge specific surface area, good electrical conductivity, good hydrophilicity, and various functional groups. The addition of GO in membranes has been proven to improve water permeability, molecular selectivity, membrane fouling mitigation, and contaminants decomposition. Recently, the development of laminated GO in membranes has achieved both high selectivity and high water permeability, overcoming the limitations of conventional polymeric or inorganic membranes. This review systematically summarizes the applications of GO composite membranes in three highlighted areas of environmental fields: desalination, gas separation, and wastewater treatment, and discusses the challenges faced with GO composite membranes.

Metal-organophosphate biphasic interfacial coordination reaction synthesizing nanofiltration membranes with the ultrathin selective layer, excellent acid-resistance and antifouling performance

Xuyou Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a metal-organophosphate biphasic interfacial coordination reaction to construct an ultrathin (13.4 nm) selective layer for phytate-based nanofiltration membranes. The membranes exhibit high permeance, excellent stability, acid resistance, and anti-pollution ability. The membranes possess abundant hydrophilic phosphate groups on the surface and a high binding energy of P-O-Fe bond, achieving long-term separation stability under harsh conditions.

Tunable Graphene Oxide Nanofiltration Membrane for Effective Dye/Salt Separation and Desalination

Chao Xing et al.

Summary: In this study, a graphene oxide membrane with tunable interlayer distance was fabricated for effective dye separation and desalination in saline textile wastewater treatment. The membrane achieved high dye rejection rates (>99%) and low salt rejection rates (<6.5%) in the first filtration stage, while demonstrating a desalination rate of up to 51.8% in the second stage. The membrane also showed excellent practical advantages such as high permeability, antifouling performance, and stability, with the potential for regenerating dye and producing clean water through multistage filtration systems.
