Constructing Mechanochemical Durable Superhydrophobic Composite Coating towards Superior Anticorrosion

Shijie Song et al.

Summary: Corrosion is a pervasive issue in various fields, leading to material degradation, environmental pollution, economic loss, and safety accidents. Superhydrophobic coatings have been considered a promising approach for corrosion inhibition due to their special surface functionalities, but their widespread application is hindered by mechanical and chemical weaknesses. A fluorine-free dual-layer microarc oxidation/superhydrophobic coating has been developed for corrosion protection, maintaining superhydrophobicity under various conditions and exhibiting significantly enhanced impedance modulus and corrosion inhibition efficiency. The synergistic effects of the microarc oxidation layer and superhydrophobic layer contribute to the enhancement of surface multifunctions, making the dual-layer coating a potential candidate for material protection applications.

Selective inhibition effects on cancer cells and bacteria of Ni-Ti-O nanoporous layers grown on biomedical NiTi alloy by anodization

Yan-Lian Liu et al.

Summary: This study aimed to endow NiTi alloy with anticancer and antibacterial abilities through surface modification. The Ni-Ti-O nanoporous layer demonstrated good performance in inhibiting cancer cell growth and killing bacteria, while showing minimal adverse effects on normal cells, due to the larger amount of Ni ions leached in the acidic microenvironment of cancer cells compared to normal cells. The nanoporous layers show promise as coatings on NiTi stents to prevent re-obstruction after surgery.

Summary: Amorphous Fe alloy coating was prepared on SUS316 substrate using HVOF spraying process, showing high hardness but micro-voids and micro-cracks. XRD and TEM confirmed the presence of amorphous and nano-crystalline phases in the coating. Corrosion tests revealed better resistance in neutral solutions and significant increase in corrosion current in seawater with higher over-potentials, attributed to oxidation of Mo and Cr elements in the Fe alloy.

Summary: Microstructural heterogeneity in metallic glasses plays a crucial role in influencing their mechanical and physical properties. Researchers have found that severe plastic deformation can enhance the spatial structural heterogeneity and reduce the energy barrier for shear transformation zones (STZs) activation. The study suggests that decreasing barriers and increasing nucleation sites of STZs during physical aging to rejuvenation may improve the plasticity in metallic glasses.
