Evolution of temperature and residual stress behavior in selective laser melting of 316L stainless steel across a cooling channel

Hamaid Mahmood Khan et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the influence of cooling channels on the thermal and residual stress behavior of the selective laser melting (SLM) 316L uni-layer thermo-mechanical model. The findings show that the high heat dissipation of the solid base due to high cooling rates can interact with smaller melt pool temperature and size. Additionally, residual stresses are lower when the laser scanning is perpendicular to the cooling channel and larger scan spacings increase residual stresses.

Evolution of residual stress behavior in selective laser melting (SLM) of 316L stainless steel through preheating and in-situ re-scanning techniques

Saad Waqar et al.

Summary: The premature fractures, cracks, distortions, and delamination in selective laser melting manufactured components are among the most prominent challenges. Residual stresses are the main causes of these issues. Post processing techniques are commonly used to reduce these stresses, but they increase production time and costs. Therefore, developing in-process techniques to reduce residual stresses is crucial for large-scale production of metallic components.

Mechanical performance of additively manufactured cobalt-chromium-molybdenum auxetic meta-biomaterial bone scaffolds

Chameekara T. Wanniarachchi et al.

Summary: Auxetic meta-biomaterials exhibit unconventional strain behavior and mechanical properties different from traditional biomaterials. This paper proposes a framework for the development of CoCrMo auxetic meta-biomaterials suitable for load-bearing bone scaffolds. The mechanical performance of five CoCrMo scaffolds with different Poisson's ratio and porosity was evaluated, and the best performing scaffold architectures were identified. The results show that the elastic modulus, yield stress, and Poisson's ratio of auxetic meta-biomaterials are primarily influenced by the underlying meta-cellular architecture.
