The contribution of stone tool residues in reconstructing Late Pleistocene hominin stone tool behaviour at Grotta di Fumane, Italy

Microstratigraphic preservation of ancient faunal and hominin DNA in Pleistocene cave sediments

Summary: DNA preserved in ancient sediments can provide valuable genetic information about past hominin and environmental diversity. This study demonstrates that resin-impregnated archaeological sediment blocks can effectively preserve DNA from hominins and other mammals. Microsampling analysis of sediment blocks from Denisova Cave reveals significant variation in the taxonomic composition of mammalian DNA at a millimeter-scale, with DNA concentrated in small particles such as bone and feces fragments. The study also successfully extracts Neanderthal DNA from a sediment block, closely related to a previously recovered Neanderthal toe bone.

A taste for the unusual. Green, flat pebbles used by late Neanderthals

Summary: The study explores the cognitive and functional criteria that influenced Neanderthals in selecting and using unique pebbles, and found no evidence for the use of similar soft green and flat pebbles like those from Fumane Cave during the Middle Palaeolithic. Despite the availability of green serpentine pebbles in the alluvial beds near the cave, these materials were only collected by Neanderthals around 44,000 years ago. Ultimately, the study provides new data to understand the role of aesthetic and technological factors in shaping human behavior during the Middle Paleolithic.

Scraping hide in the early Upper Paleolithic: Insights into the life and function of the Protoaurignacian endscrapers at Fumane Cave

Summary: Endscrapers are commonly found in Upper Paleolithic sites in Europe, but have received relatively little attention in discussions about technological change and tool specialization. A study in northeastern Italy revealed that these tools were highly specialized for hide working, rather than the production of bone and antler tools, highlighting marked differences with transitional industries and reaffirming the complex nature of the Aurignacian culture.
