The Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph for the James Webb Space Telescope. IV. Aperture Masking Interferometry

Anand Sivaramakrishnan et al.

Summary: The James Webb Space Telescope's Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (JWST-NIRISS) uses a 7-hole non-redundant mask (NRM) interferometer operating at 3-5 μm wavelengths. The NIRISS Aperture Masking Interferometry (AMI) mode is described, along with its underlying principles, sample science cases, operational observing strategies, data simulations for proposal development, and data analysis methods. Commissioning results of AMI are also presented. Additionally, NIRISS Kernel Phase Imaging (KPI) methods and analysis techniques, including a user-friendly KPI pipeline, are covered. The AMI NRM and KPI achieve an inner working angle of approximately 70 mas, which is well within the similar working angle of NIRCam's circular occulter coronagraphs at comparable wavelengths.

Two Rings and a Marginally Resolved, 5 au Disk around LkCa 15 Identified via Near-infrared Sparse Aperture Masking Interferometry

Dori Blakely et al.

Summary: Sparse aperture masking interferometry (SAM) is a high-resolution observing technique that allows for imaging at and beyond a telescope's diffraction limit. This study analyzed VLT/SPHERE-IRDIS SAM observations of the transition disk LkCa 15, modeled the extended disk emission, and improved contrast limits for planets. The study detected two previously observed asymmetric rings and for the first time, robustly recovered an elliptical Gaussian inner disk.

Performance of near-infrared high-contrast imaging methods with JWST from commissioning

Jens Kammerer et al.

Summary: The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) will revolutionize high-contrast imaging in the mid-infrared, allowing for direct detection of Saturn-mass planets and characterization of substellar companions. Through simulation and analysis of observational data, researchers have found that JWST performs close to predicted limits in L- and M-bands, surpassing ground-based instruments by a factor of 10 at larger separations.

Mid-infrared photometry of the T Tauri triple system with kernel phase interferometry

J. Kammerer et al.

Summary: Studying the mid-infrared photometry of the three components of the T Tauri system can reveal their complex silicate features and dust distribution, especially with the dimming phenomenon of T Tau Sb reminding us of the impact of dust on photometry. Errors limit the precision of kernel phase interferometry in photometry measurements.

Kernel Phase and Coronagraphy with Automatic Differentiation

Benjamin J. S. Pope et al.

Summary: The accumulation of aberrations in a telescope can lead to image distortions and speckles, limiting camera performance at high angular resolution. It is essential to achieve high sensitivity to faint sources through hardware and data analysis software. Automatic differentiation software simplifies the calculation of derivatives with respect to aberrations for any optical system.
