Bait input altered microbial community structure and increased greenhouse gases production in coastal wetland sediment

Genmei Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impacts of bait input on sediment microbial community, greenhouse gas (GHG) production, and physicochemical properties. The results showed that bait input significantly affected dissolved oxygen, dissolved organic carbon, and various sediment properties. Additionally, bait input led to changes in microbial community composition and increased GHG production. These findings highlight the importance of coastal aquaculture in global GHG emissions.

Denitrification rates in tidal marsh soils: The roles of soil texture, salinity and nitrogen enrichment

Minjie Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that denitrification rates were higher in loam soils compared to sandy soils, regardless of salinity levels. Denitrification rates were also higher in oligohaline marsh loam soils compared to freshwater marsh loam soils. Exogenous nitrogen input enhanced denitrification in estuarine marsh soils, with high nitrogen content in loam soils particularly enhancing nitrogen removal in freshwater environments.

Shift of DNRA bacterial community composition in sediment cores of the Pearl River Estuary and the impact of environmental factors

Yaohao Hu et al.

Summary: The study revealed a diversity and richness variation of DNRA bacteria along a salinity gradient in sediment cores of the Pearl River Estuary, with specific spatial distribution of DNRA bacterial communities driven by environmental factors. Dominant DNRA bacteria were identified as key populations in the PRE sediments.

Nitrogen cycling processes in sediments of the Pearl River Estuary: Spatial variations, controlling factors, and environmental implications

Fangjuan Huang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the microbial nitrogen cycling processes in surface sediments of the Pearl River Estuary, revealing higher rates and gene abundance in the outer estuary. Denitrification was found to be the dominant pathway contributing to nitrate reduction in the study area, suggesting the sediment's significant role in mitigating and controlling nitrogen pollution. The study also highlights the complexity of nitrogen cycling processes in controlling the N budget in the Pearl River Estuary and improving the understanding of these processes in estuarine and coastal ecosystems.

Summary: This study successfully predicted nitrification rate and the fraction of nitrification as N2O emissions using data mining and machine learning techniques. The machine-learning based model outperformed traditional process-based models, providing insights for advancing models for projecting N dynamics and greenhouse gas emissions.

Nitrogen loads alter the N2 production between denitrification and anammox in Min River Estuary, a highly impacted estuary in southeast China

Xiaofei Li et al.

Summary: Estuarine sediment denitrification and anammox in response to increased nitrogen loads were investigated using a N isotope tracer approach. The study found that denitrification and anammox rates varied along the estuary, with different controls on the partitioning of N2 production. NH4+ and NOx were identified as crucial predictors for the partitioning between denitrification and anammox.

Summary: The developed REOX/MIMS method provides a sensitive and precise approach for quantifying (NO3-)-N-15 concentrations in small water volumes. It was rapid, accurate, and cost-effective, making it a valuable tool for studying N transformation rates in isotope-enrichment experiments in various ecosystems.

Stimulation of N2O emission via bacterial denitrification driven by acidification in estuarine sediments

Xiaoxuan Su et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that acidification stimulates N2O release from estuarine sediments, mainly mediated by bacterial denitrification; in neutral environments, N2O production is dominated by fungi. The contribution of chemo-denitrification to N2O production cannot be ignored, but is not significantly affected by acidification.

Coupled relationships among anammox, denitrification, and dissimilatory nitrate reduction to ammonium along salinity gradients in a Chinese estuarine wetland

Zijun Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated that increased salinization leads to the dominance of DNRA over denitrification in estuarine wetlands, possibly through the addition of sulfur and alteration of the C/N ratio. These changes result in increased nitrogen retention in estuarine wetlands during salinization, which may enhance eutrophication potential within wetlands and downstream ecosystems.

Summary: This study revealed that biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in sediments of Meiliang Bay is closely linked to variations in dissolved sulfide concentration, which has broadened our understanding of BNF in freshwater lakes. The composition of diazotrophic community in sediments varied between seasons, with dissolved sulfide having a more significant effect on the structure of the community.
