Review on two-terminal and four-terminal crystalline-silicon/perovskite tandem solar cells; progress, challenges, and future perspectives

Ehsan Raza et al.

Summary: Silicon solar cells are the dominant technology in the photovoltaic market, but their efficiency still falls short of the theoretical limit. Perovskite solar cells, with their solution-processability and tunable bandgap, offer great potential for tandem configurations with silicon. Si/perovskite tandem solar cells have achieved high efficiencies and factors affecting their performance are discussed.

RF-sputtering fabrication of flexible glass-based 1D photonic crystals

Alice Carlotto et al.

Summary: Flexible photonics, a rapidly emerging research field, allows for a wide range of applications by integrating photonic systems on deformable substrates. This study presents a radio frequency (RF) sputtering deposition protocol for fabricating glass-based one-dimensional (1D) photonic crystals on flexible and rigid substrates. Results show that the different nature of the substrates and mechanical deformation do not significantly affect the key spectral properties of the photonic crystals.

A levelized cost of energy approach to select and optimise emerging PV technologies: The relative impact of degradation, cost and initial efficiency

Balder A. Nieto-Diaz et al.

Summary: A model of levelized cost of energy is presented in this study, taking into account the common 'burn-in' losses in photovoltaic devices with organic and perovskite absorber layers. The research quantifies the relative importance of burn-in, module cost, and initial efficiency for a grid-scale PV installation in Fiji. It is found that improvements in PV technology to reduce LCOE depend critically on the current status of the technology.

Multi-junction solar cells paving the way for super high-efficiency

Masafumi Yamaguchi et al.

Summary: High-performance solar cells, particularly multi-junction solar cells using different bandgap semiconductor materials, are considered a promising pathway towards achieving high power efficiency at low cost. III-V semiconductor materials have been shown to provide an effective system for fabricating multi-junction solar cells that can span the solar spectrum, with record efficiencies demonstrating their potential. Other materials like perovskites are also being explored for their lower manufacturing costs. The development and potential market applications of multi-junction solar cells, including III-V/Si, II-VI/Si, cadmium chalcogenide/Si, and perovskite/Si tandem solar cells, are discussed based on scientific and technological arguments.
