Synergistic effects on gamma-ray shielding by novel light-weight nanocomposite materials of bentonite containing nano Bi2O3 additive

Rehab M. El-Sharkawy et al.

Summary: This study aims to fabricate new nanocomposites using raw bentonite clay and bismuth oxide nanoparticles as a natural and non-toxic matrix and additive, respectively, for use in gamma radiation shielding and protection. The results confirmed that increasing the loading percentage of bismuth oxide nanoparticles enhanced the shielding properties of gamma radiation.

Experimental and FLUKA evaluation on structure and optical properties and γ-radiation shielding capacity of bismuth borophosphate glasses

A. M. Madbouly et al.

Summary: This study experimentally measured the photon transmissions, linear attenuation coefficients, and shielding properties of bismuth-borophosphate glasses at different gamma-ray energy levels, and compared the results with the FLUKA code, finding good agreement. The addition of Bi2O3 improved the shielding properties of the glass, with absorbance increasing as the Bi2O3 content increased. The optical constants of the glasses were also examined using FTIR spectroscopy, and it was found that bismuth-borophosphate glasses offer excellent gamma-ray shielding properties.

Synergistic effect of nano-bentonite and nanocadmium oxide doping concentrations on assembly, characterization, and enhanced gamma-rays shielding properties of polypropylene ternary nanocomposites

Rehab M. El-Sharkawy et al.

Summary: The study focused on designing novel ternary nanocomposites, PP/CdO-NPs-NBent, for effective gamma-ray shielding by doping polypropylene with cadmium oxide nanoparticles and nano-bentonite. Experimental results showed that the addition of CdO-NPs increased the mass attenuation coefficient, effective atomic number, and effective electron density of the nanocomposites, with the NC2 sample containing 40.0 wt% CdO-NPs exhibiting the best gamma-ray shielding performance.

Ceramic tiles doped with lead oxide nanoparticles: Their fabrication, physical, mechanical characteristics and γ-ray shielding performance

Mohamed E. Mahmoud et al.

Summary: Novel ceramic tile/lead oxide nanocomposites were assembled and characterized for their structural and mechanical properties, with lead oxide nanoparticles enhancing the modulus of rupture as their content increased. The physical properties of the composites, including curvature of edges, water adsorption, and bulk density, were examined. Lead oxide nanoparticles significantly improved the gamma-ray shielding abilities of the ceramic tile composites, demonstrating potential for applications in radiation shielding.

Role of novel ternary nanocomposites polypropylene in nuclear radiation attenuation properties: In-depth simulation study

Hesham Mh Zakaly et al.

Summary: A new ternary nanocomposite was prepared by doping polypropylene (PP) with nano-cadmium oxide CdO-NPs and nano-bentonite (Bent. NPs) for gamma-ray shielding. The addition of CdO NPs was found to enhance the linear attenuation coefficient (LAC) and improve the shielding competence of the fabricated nanocomposite. The study showed that increasing the content of CdO NPs in the composite significantly decreases the half-value layer (HVL) of the material, with the CdO NPs composite at 40 wt% being the superior shield among the fabricated samples.

A comparative Study Between Fluka and Microshield Modeling Calculations to study the Radiation-Shielding of Nanoparticles and Plastic Waste composites

Atef El-Taher et al.

Summary: A comparative study was conducted on the radiation shielding properties of plastic waste mixed with nano copper oxide and phosphotungstic acid using FLUKA code and Microshield software programs. The new nanocomposite was found to be effective in shielding gamma radiation due to the presence of dense materials like nano copper oxide and phosphotungstic acid. The results indicated that the mass attenuation coefficients and effective atomic and electron densities of the samples increased with higher PTA content, while the half-value layer, tenth value layer, and mean free path decreased.

Effect of bulk and nanoparticle Bi2O3 on attenuation capability of radiation shielding glass

M. Elsafi et al.

Summary: Increasing Bi2O3 content in the glass matrix improves shielding capability, with nanoparticles providing greater attenuation compared to bulk Bi2O3. Analysis of mass attenuation coefficients, linear attenuation coefficients, and other values reveal further insights into the material properties. Overall, glass with 20% Bi2O3 nanoparticles showed the most potential for radiation shielding applications.
