Informal landfill contributes to the pollution of microplastics in the surrounding environment

Yong Wan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of microplastic pollution in an informal landfill in South China. The results indicate that a large amount of microplastics are present in the landfill refuse and underlying soil, with most of them being fibrous, small sized, and transparent. The microplastics detected in the landfill leachate and groundwater are even smaller and more diverse in polymer types. The study demonstrates that microplastics from informal landfills can leak out to the surrounding environment.

Direct Polypropylene and Polyethylene Liquefaction in CO2 and N2 Atmospheres Using MgO Light and CaO as Catalysts

Jose Miguel Hidalgo Herrador et al.

Summary: The polyolefin to lighter molecules reaction has the potential to convert waste plastic into fuels and valuable chemicals. The use of MgO light and CaO catalysts improves the conversion efficiency of propylene and ethylene into liquid products, while reducing gaseous and solid byproducts. Reactions performed in a CO2 atmosphere result in higher conversion rates and a higher content of diesel and kerosene components in the products.

Thermo-catalytic pyrolysis of polystyrene in batch and semi-batch reactors: A comparative study

Amer Inayat et al.

Summary: Thermo-catalytic pyrolysis is a promising process for chemical recycling of waste polymeric materials, with PS wastes being excellent feedstocks. Semi-batch reactors outperformed batch reactors in terms of oil and SM yields in both thermal and catalytic tests. Layered catalyst arrangement can produce higher oil yields with higher selectivity for SM.

Characterization of Gasoline-like Transportation Fuels Obtained by Distillation of Pyrolysis Oils from Plastic Waste Mixtures

Zsolt Dobo et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that pyrolysis of plastic waste can produce waste plastic gasoline (WPG) that meets transportation fuel standards, although there are issues with olefin content and distillation properties exceeding limits. Engine tests show a slight decrease in fuel consumption with WPG compared to commercial gasoline, but a slight increase in NOx emissions.

Two-step pyrolysis for waste HDPE valorization

Luis Rodriguez-Luna et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis process is an attractive alternative for recycling and reutilization of HDPE, with the ability to produce valuable chemical feedstock and high energy content hydrocarbons. By optimizing the process parameters, a volatile fraction equivalent to 97% of HDPE mass can be obtained. Chemical analysis shows that oil products have a greater variety of shorter-chain compounds compared to wax products.

Characterization and Use of Char Produced from Pyrolysis of Post-Consumer Mixed Plastic Waste

M. A. Martin-Lara et al.

Summary: In this study, the pyrolysis of post-consumer mixed plastic waste was conducted to produce solid products used as adsorbents for lead in aqueous media. The results show that pyrolysis temperature affects the yield and properties of the solid product, with higher temperatures leading to lower carbon, hydrogen, and nitrogen content. Higher pyrolysis temperatures also result in increased adsorption capacity, with the solid obtained at 550 degrees C showing the highest value at 7.91 mg/g. Additionally, the Sips model best reproduces the experimental results of the adsorption process equilibrium study.

Recent Progress in Low-Cost Catalysts for Pyrolysis of Plastic Waste to Fuels

Ganjar Fadillah et al.

Summary: The study focuses on the catalytic and thermal decomposition of plastic waste to fuels using low-cost catalysts like zeolite, clay, and bimetallic material. It examines the effects of different types of catalysts on the characteristics and product distribution of the produced products, highlighting the importance of catalyst type in plastic waste decomposition and oil yield/quality. Factors such as operating temperature, plastic waste-to-catalyst ratio, and reactor type are crucial in determining the quality and yield of oil products. The development of low-cost catalysts is crucial for efficient conversion of plastic solid waste (PSW) into oil/bio-oil products.

Deactivation and Regeneration of Zeolite Catalysts Used in Pyrolysis of Plastic Wastes-A Process and Analytical Review

Vivien Daligaux et al.

Summary: In catalytic industrial processes, coke deposition remains a major drawback for solid catalysts use as it causes catalyst deactivation. Various regeneration processes have been investigated over the years to restore catalytic activity by recovering deactivated catalysts. This review focuses on oxidative treatments for catalyst regeneration and summarizes relevant analytical techniques for characterizing deactivated and regenerated solid catalysts.
