Experimental and numerical simulation on smoke control effect and key parameters of Push-pull air curtain in tunnel fire

Jingwei Ji et al.

Summary: In this study, a new type of push-pull air curtain was designed and its smoke control effect was verified through experiments and numerical simulations. The results show that the push-pull air curtain is more effective than exhausting smoke from the side wall of the tunnel. The velocity of the push air and the factors such as air curtain spacing, width, and velocity have significant effects on the smoke control efficiency.

Experimental study on the effects of exhaust vent layout on plug-holing for ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnel fires

Yingli Liu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the phenomenon of plug-holing induced by ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnel fires through a series of reduced-scale experiments. The influencing factors for the occurrence of plug-holing are analyzed by changing the vent width, heat release rate, and the area of the ceiling extraction vent. The experimental results show that increasing any of these factors can increase the smoke exhaust flow rate corresponding to the occurrence of plug-holing. A modified Froude number is proposed to predict plug-holing, and a constant critical value of 4.71 (Fr-c = 4.71) is determined regardless of the variation in the influencing factors. These findings provide valuable insights for the design of ceiling central smoke extraction in road tunnels.

Plug-holing height and complete plug-holing phenomenon in naturally ventilated tunnel fires with vertical shaft

Shengzhong Zhao et al.

Summary: The ventilation performance and plug-holing phenomenon of vertical shaft in tunnel fires were analyzed through numerical simulations, revealing that shaft length and height have significant impacts on ventilation efficiency and plug-holing height, with plug-holing height being more sensitive to shaft length but less sensitive to shaft height. In car fire scenarios, the occurrence of complete plug-holing can be determined by checking if the dimensionless plug-holing height meets a specific critical value.

The plug-holing of lateral mechanical exhaust in subway station: Phenomena, analysis, and numerical verification

Wei Zhong et al.

Summary: The study shows that increasing exhaust velocity can lead to plug-holing at the lateral exhaust vent, decreasing the effectiveness of smoke exhaust. Introducing a virtual smoke vent and proposing a critical Froude number can predict the occurrence of plug-holing in lateral mechanical exhaust systems.
