The Sex Determination Cascade in the Silkworm

Xu Yang et al.

Summary: Insects have three levels of master regulators in their sex determination pathways: primary signals, executors, and transducers. While primary signals vary widely among insect species, the doublesex gene is highly conserved as the executor component across multiple orders. Research on sex determination in Lepidoptera, focusing on the silkworm, has identified unique primary signals and executor components like Fem, Masc, and PSI proteins. Despite a basic understanding, the connections among primary signals, transducers, and executors remain largely unknown in Lepidoptera.

Pleiotropic Roles of the Orthologue of the Drosophila melanogaster Intersex Gene in the Brown Planthopper

Hou-Hong Zhang et al.

Summary: The Nlix gene plays a vital role in the early nymphal development and reproductive system development of brown planthoppers. Knockdown of Nlix results in external genital defects in both sexes and loss of reproductive ability. Additionally, Nlix is required for early embryogenesis and has pleiotropic roles in the reproductive system development of hemimetabolous insects.
