Adaptive laboratory evolution and reverse engineering enhances autotrophic growth in Pichia pastoris

Thomas Gassler et al.

Summary: Synthetic biology offers multiple pathways for converting CO2 into biomass or bio-chemicals, reducing the unsustainable use of organic feedstocks that contribute to climate change. The use of industrial organisms like Pichia pastoris allows for the development of novel bioproduction platforms with reduced reliance on alternative food production resources. By rewiring the central carbon metabolism and utilizing reverse genetic engineering, it is possible to enhance the autotrophic growth of microbes and explore potential applications for producing value-added products using CO2.

Carbon-negative production of acetone and isopropanol by gas fermentation at industrial pilot scale

Fungmin Eric Liew et al.

Summary: We have developed a carbon-negative fermentation route for producing acetone and isopropanol from waste gas, which fixes carbon and has a negative carbon footprint. By engineering acetogens, we achieved sustainable, high-efficiency, high-selectivity chemicals production.

Global Carbon Budget 2021

Pierre Friedlingstein et al.

Summary: Accurate assessment of anthropogenic CO2 emissions and their redistribution among different components is critical for understanding the global carbon cycle. This study presents datasets and methodologies to quantify the major components of the global carbon budget. The results show changes in fossil fuel and land-use change emissions, as well as atmospheric CO2 concentration, ocean CO2 sink, and terrestrial CO2 sink.

Coordination of consolidated bioprocessing technology and carbon dioxide fixation to produce malic acid directly from plant biomass in Myceliophthora thermophila

Jingen Li et al.

Summary: This study successfully designed and constructed a novel biorefinery system named DMCC, which efficiently converts raw plant biomass and CO2 into organic acids, presenting a promising strategy for cost-effective production of value-added compounds in biorefinery. The DMCC system is one of the great options for realization of carbon neutral economy.
