Comparison of Bovine and Carp Fish Visual Pigment Photo-Intermediates at Room Temperature

Dinesh Dhankhar et al.

Summary: This study presents the kinetics and time-resolved spectra of intermediate states of bovine and carp fish rhodopsin visual pigments, revealing the formation and decay processes of key intermediates in visual phototransduction. The results show that carp rhodopsin samples have a significantly faster decay rate for their intermediates compared to bovine samples.

Vitamin A1/A2 chromophore exchange: Its role in spectral tuning and visual plasticity

Joseph C. Corbo

Summary: Vertebrate rod and cone photoreceptors detect light through the outer segment, packed with light-sensitive molecules known as visual pigments. Conversion of A1 to A2 in the retina red-shifts the spectral sensitivity of visual pigments, allowing organisms to dynamically adjust to their environment's predominant light wavelengths. The use of A2 represents an important and widespread mechanism of sensory plasticity in a quarter of vertebrate species.
