Thermodynamic evidence for a field-angle-dependent Majorana gap in a Kitaev spin liquid

O. Tanaka et al.

Summary: By measuring the heat capacity of alpha-RuCl3 under different magnetic field directions, this study reveals strongly angle-dependent low-energy excitations in the material. These findings are consistent with the characteristics of itinerant Majorana fermions in the Kitaev model. Furthermore, the changes in edge transport correspond to the opening and closing of the bulk gap according to the magnetic field direction, and the absence of the quantum thermal Hall effect at higher magnetic fields suggests a nematic quantum spin liquid state with two-fold rotational symmetry.

Antiferromagnetic Kitaev interaction inJ eff=1/2 cobalt honeycomb materials Na3Co2SbO6 and Na2Co2TeO6

Chaebin Kim et al.

Summary: We have identified two new honeycomb cobalt-based systems, Na3Co2SbO6 and Na2Co2TeO6, with antiferromagnetic (AFM) Kitaev interaction through experiments and analysis. The spin-orbit excitons observed in both compounds support the presence of a spin-orbit entangled state. We also found that a generalized Kitaev-Heisenberg Hamiltonian can accurately describe the spin-wave excitations in both compounds.

Magnetic field induced topological transitions and thermal conductivity in a generalized Kitaev model

Heqiu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the magnetic field dependence of thermal conductivity in a generalized Kitaev model, showing dip-bump structures caused by transitions between different flux sectors or topological transitions within the same sector. The change in Majorana Chern number induced by four-Majorana-fermion interaction is closely related to the nonmonotonic behavior of thermal conductivity.

Scale-invariant magnetic anisotropy in RuCl3at high magnetic fields

K. A. Modic et al.

Summary: The study reveals scale-invariant magnetic anisotropy in RuCl3, providing evidence for a high degree of exchange frustration favoring the formation of a spin liquid state. Magnetic field and temperature compete to determine the magnetic response independently of the large intrinsic exchange-interaction energy.

Magnetic excitations of the field-induced states in BaCo2(AsO4)2 probed by time-domain terahertz spectroscopy

L. Y. Shi et al.

Summary: The search for Kitaev quantum spin liquids (QSLs) is a fascinating yet challenging problem, with potential candidates being explored in various materials with strong spin-orbit coupling. Recent theoretical studies proposed Co-based honeycomb materials as promising candidates for a Kitaev QSL. Experimental studies on BaCo2(AsO4)(2) suggested proximity to a Kitaev QSL, but further research showed that the field-induced state in the low-temperature region is not a Kitaev QSL. Comparisons with the widely studied RuCl3 candidate were made to address similarities in magnetic excitations.

Angle-dependent thermodynamics of α-RuCl3

S. Bachus et al.

Summary: The thermodynamics of the Kitaev honeycomb magnet alpha-RuCl3 were studied for different directions of in-plane magnetic field using measurements of the magnetic Gruneisen parameter and specific heat. Two critical fields were identified, with the possibility of inverse melting of the ordered phase in a narrow region of magnetic fields. Large field-induced entropy effects suggest the presence of additional low-energy excitations.

Testing topological phase transitions in Kitaev materials under in-plane magnetic fields: Application to α-RuCl3

Jacob S. Gordon et al.

Summary: Research on the material realization of the non-Abelian Kitaev spin liquid phase, specifically the Ising topological order (ITO), has focused on the 4d honeycomb Mott insulator alpha-RuCl3. The observation of field-induced magnetically disordered state and half-integer quantized thermal Hall conductivity in alpha-RuCl3 provides evidence for the topological phase transition between two ITOs with opposite Chern numbers. The proposal that the magnetotropic coefficient k could serve as a thermodynamic quantity sensitive to the phase transition highlights the potential for further understanding of the transition in alpha-RuCl3.
