A directional framework of similarity laws for geometrically distorted structures subjected to impact loads

Shuai Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes a directional framework, called ODLV system, for geometrically distorted structures under impact loads. The framework overcomes the limitations of traditional dimensional analysis by explicitly expressing the oriented dimensions, dimensionless numbers, and scaling factors using three characteristic lengths. Similarity laws for directional stresses, strains, and displacements are expressed by power law relationships of ratio of undistorted characteristic lengths to distorted characteristic lengths. The proposed framework shows excellent performance in expressing dimensionless response equations and geometrically distorted scaling.

Scaling strategies for multi-purpose floating structures physical modeling: state of art and new perspectives

Carlo Ruzzo et al.

Summary: Multi-purpose floating platforms are a promising concept in ocean engineering applications, but their complexity requires validation through numerical tools and physical models. The challenge lies in the need for relatively large physical models due to the different scaling laws of subsystems. Open-sea experiments may complement traditional indoor tests, despite facing challenging environmental conditions.

The scaling of nonlinear structural dynamic systems

Keith Davey et al.

Summary: The new scaling theory introduces new similitude rules and extends the classical definition of similitude for nonlinear structural dynamics. Application of two properly designed scaled experiments can significantly extend the limited scope provided by a single scaled experiment, demonstrating benefits for a range of loading conditions. Exact similitude for two scaled experiments is confirmed, providing exact replication of behaviors over long timescales.
