Experimental study on burning rates of large-scale hydrocarbon pool fires under controlled wind conditions

Jiao Lei et al.

Summary: The study investigated the burning of aviation fuel and diesel oil in open square fuel pools of different sizes under controlled wind conditions. It was found that the burning rates were proportional to the ratios of the ideal heat of combustion to the effective heat of gasification, and a modified Froude number was developed to better predict the behavior of large-scale pool fires under various wind speeds.

Merging dynamics of dual parallel linear diffusion flames

Kaiyuan Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the merging characteristics of two identical linear diffusion flames, finding that the merging probability and merging flame height are related to flame spacing and heat release rate. A new dimensionless heat release rate parameter is proposed, and it is observed that decreasing entrained air from the ground facilitates flame merging. The merging flame height is determined by the competition of buoyancy and pressure difference, and can be correlated with the effective entrainment perimeter and dimensionless heat release rate.

Physical modeling and machine learning of ceiling maximum temperature rise induced by tandem heat sources with unequal heat release rates in a natural ventilation tunnel

Lei Deng et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of ceiling maximum temperature induced by adjacent heat sources with unequal fire heat release rates in a tunnel through physical modeling experiments and machine learning prediction. The results show that the ceiling maximum temperature gradually decreases with increasing separation distance between adjacent fires for a given total heat release rate. Additionally, the ceiling maximum temperature rise of the tunnel presents nonmonotonic changes with increasing ratio of the upstream fire heat release rate to the total heat release rate.

Flame interaction and tilting behavior of two tandem adjacent hydrocarbon turbulent diffusion flames in crosswind: An experimental quantification and characterization

Yuhang Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the flame interaction and tilting behaviors of two tandem adjacent hydrocarbon turbulent diffusion flames in crosswind, revealing complex interactions influenced by flame length, separation distance, and crosswind speed. Significant differences were observed in tilt angles between merged and non-merged flames, highlighting the importance of dynamic behaviors of flames in different conditions.
