A resolved CFD-DEM coupling model for modeling two-phase fluids interaction with irregularly shaped particles

Zhihao Shen et al.

Summary: A resolved coupling model was developed in this paper to simulate the interaction between two-phase fluids and irregularly shaped particles using CFD and DEM. The model calculates meso-scale flow around particles and directly computes the fluid forces on multi-sphere particles without relying on empirical drag force models. Benchmark cases and a case study on dambreak wave impact on a rock pile demonstrate the accuracy and potential application of the model in coastal engineering.

Terminal velocity and drag coefficient models for disc-shaped particles based on the imaging experiment

Changjiang Zhou et al.

Summary: In this study, terminal velocity and drag coefficient models for disc-shaped particles were proposed based on imaging experiments. The results showed that terminal velocity is closely related to the shape, size, and density of the particles, and particle shape factors should be considered in the drag coefficient model. The proposed models, fitted by the LM + UGO optimization algorithm, demonstrated higher accuracy and stability compared to published models. These findings are important for understanding particle motion behavior.

The dominant underlying parameters controlling the dispersion of falling particle curtains

Nima Sedaghatizadeh et al.

Summary: This study presents a new analytical model to analyze the dispersion of a free-falling curtain of heavier-than-fluid particles. The model calculates the particle velocity and the volumetric flow rate of the induced air using an Eulerian approach. It incorporates a new drag model to account for the sphericity of the particles and provides a root mean square error of less than 10% in predicting the drag coefficient. The model also considers the effects of particle size, mass flow rate, sphericity, and particle density on various parameters. The study provides insights into the evolution of falling particle curtains and offers a new method to characterize their behavior.

Aerodynamic coefficients of irregular non-spherical particles at intermediate Reynolds numbers

C. Castang et al.

Summary: In industrial processes, particles can take irregular non-spherical shapes, but numerical computations usually assume spherical particles due to limited understanding of the fluid dynamic forces acting on irregular particles. This study aims to generate new information about the flow resistance coefficients experienced by non-spherical particles with different degrees of sphericity in a uniform flow. Particle Resolved Direct Numerical Simulations are performed to compute the flow coefficients, and the obtained results show a scattering around the mean values with sensitivity to particle irregularity and aspect ratio.

Wake bifurcations behind two circular disks in tandem arrangement

Jianzhi Yang et al.

Summary: The wake bifurcations behind two circular disks in tandem arrangement are investigated through numerical simulations. The wake dynamics are examined in terms of the flow structures as well as drag and lift coefficient characteristics. Seven main wake regimes are observed, including wake modes that are unique to tandem disk wakes. The bifurcations are delayed and different in tandem configuration compared to a single disk wake.

Drag and heat transfer coefficients for axisymmetric nonspherical particles: A LBM study

Yong Chen et al.

Summary: The study utilized the thermal lattice Boltzmann method to calculate drag coefficients and Nusselt numbers for nonspherical particles in uniform flow over a wide range of Reynolds numbers and aspect ratios. The results showed that the drag coefficient for ellipsoids and spherocylinders varied with the incident angle, while the Nusselt number for prolate ellipsoids was affected by the aspect ratio.

B. Kravets et al.

Summary: In this study, particle-unresolved simulations were compared to direct numerical simulations using the Lattice-Boltzmann method. By eliminating particle motion, the accuracy of CFD can be examined in detail at the particle scale. The influence of particle shape on numerical accuracy of non-resolved DEM/CFD was studied, particularly focusing on non-spherical particles.

Summary: The lack of constitutive drag laws for non-spherical particles in fluid-particle flows highlights the need for dedicated laws to replace previous ad-hoc methods. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to explore important variables for future model development and propose a preliminary non-spherical drag model based on the results.

Particle-resolved simulation on viscous flow past random and ordered arrays of hot ellipsoidal particles

Jianhong Fu et al.

Summary: The study used particle-resolved simulation to investigate drag force on arrays of ellipsoidal particles with a temperature difference compared to the surrounding fluid. It found that particle shape and arrangement strongly influence the drag coefficient C-D at low particle volume fractions, but this influence decreases as the volume fraction increases. Additionally, the study revealed that the drag coefficient decreases with increasing solid volume fraction, increases with particle temperature, and slightly decreases with fluid temperature.

Summary: The experimental investigation on the free settling of micrometer-sized graphite particles showed that the drag coefficient of the particles still follows the form of Stokes law and scales inversely proportional to the particle Reynolds number. A new correlation for the drag coefficient was proposed and the Bagheri and Bonadonna's correlation was found to well represent the drag coefficient of graphite particles in a wide range of particle Reynolds number.
