Occurrence, Risk Factors, Serotypes, and Antimicrobial Resistance of Salmonella Strains Isolated from Imported Fertile Hatching Eggs, Hatcheries, and Broiler Farms in Trinidad and Tobago

Anisa S. Khan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence, risk factors, and characteristics of Salmonella isolates from imported fertile broiler hatching eggs, hatcheries, and broiler farms in Trinidad and Tobago. The study found different isolation rates and antimicrobial resistance profiles of Salmonella in the different sources. Particularly, there was a high level of multidrug resistance among Salmonella isolates from broiler farms, which has important implications for therapy and food safety.

Molecular Characterization of Salmonella Detected along the Broiler Production Chain in Trinidad and Tobago

Anisa Sarah Khan et al.

Summary: This study provides molecular characterization of Salmonella isolates from the entire broiler production continuum in the Caribbean region using whole-genome sequencing. Various serovars were detected, and multidrug resistance was found in the isolates from broiler farms. The availability of these genomes will aid in future epidemiological investigations.

Whole-Genome Sequencing Analysis of Salmonella Enterica Serotype Enteritidis Isolated from Poultry Sources in South Korea, 2010-2017

Ji-Yeon Hyeon et al.

Summary: This study investigated 96 SE isolates from poultry sources in South Korea from 2010 to 2017, revealing the presence of various antimicrobial resistance genes and a common virulence gene profile among the isolates. Phylogenetic analysis suggested the existence of genetically related isolates in processing plants, slaughterhouses, and retail meats, indicating a potential common source for different SE strains.

Whole-Genome Sequencing Reveals the Presence of the blaCTX-M-65 Gene in Extended-Spectrum β-Lactamase-Producing and Multi-Drug-Resistant Clones of Salmonella Serovar Infantis Isolated from Broiler Chicken Environments in the Galapagos Islands

Elton Burnett et al.

Summary: Four multi-drug resistant S. Infantis strains recovered from the poultry house environments in Santa Cruz Island of the Galapagos show extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL) resistance and reduced fluoroquinolone susceptibility. Whole-genome sequencing revealed the presence of the ESBL-conferring bla(CTX-M-65) gene in an IncFIB-like plasmid in three S. Infantis isolates, which are closely related to clinical and veterinary S. Infantis isolates from the United States and Latin America. Phylogenetic analysis inferred close relatedness between the S. Infantis isolates from Galapagos and the United States, highlighting the need for increased monitoring and surveillance programs to determine prevalence, sources, and reservoirs of MDR pathogens.

Long-Read Sequencing Reveals Evolution and Acquisition of Antimicrobial Resistance and Virulence Genes in Salmonella enterica

Cong Li et al.

Summary: This study used long-read sequencing to investigate the genomic heterogeneity and antimicrobial resistance mechanisms of Salmonella isolated from retail meats and food animals. It found significant genetic variation among different serotypes, with the presence of plasmids playing a key role in genomic variability. Moreover, the bacteria's resistance mechanisms may be associated with plasmid types, sources, and serotypes.

Characterization of Salmonella Isolates Recovered from Stages of the Processing Lines at Four Broiler Processing Plants in Trinidad and Tobago

Anisa Sarah Khan et al.

Summary: This study found that the prevalence of Salmonella contamination in chicken at four broiler processing plants in Trinidad was 27%, with risk factors including the use of over 100 contract farmers and certain processing methods. The dominant serotypes isolated were S. Enteritidis, Javiana, and Infantis, and multi-drug resistance was detected in 12.3% of the isolates. The presence of resistant Salmonella in chickens processed at these plants has implications for salmonellosis and treatment failure in consumers.
