Chemical versus infrared spectroscopic measurements of quality attributes of sun or oven dried fruit leathers from apple, plum and apple-plum mixture

Nizam Mustafa Nizamlioglu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of convective and sun drying on quality parameters of apple, plum, and a blend of apple and plum leathers. The study also compared physical, sensory, and chemical attributes determined by chemical methods with an infrared spectroscopic method. Overall, infrared spectroscopic method was recommended for a robust and fast determination of physico-chemical attributes in fruit leather production.

Ripening assessment of 'Ortanique' (Citrus reticulata Blanco x Citrus sinensis (L) Osbeck) on tree by SW-NIR reflectance spectroscopy-based calibration models

Rosa Pires et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the ripening of 'Ortanique' citrus using SW-NIRS technology, with calibration models for internal quality attributes showing better performance in internal validation than external validation. The models predicted pH, SSC, TA, and MI accurately internally, with TA and MI also showing good external validation results. Additional strategies were explored to improve model accuracy, resulting in clear improvements.

Accurate non-destructive prediction of peach fruit internal quality and physiological maturity with a single scan using near infrared spectroscopy

Ioannis S. Minas et al.

Summary: The development of precise and reliable near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)-based non-destructive tools has been a challenge for assessing the physicochemical properties of fleshy fruit. A novel protocol involving crop load and fruit developmental stage was used to calibrate multivariate NIRS prediction models, accurately estimating peach internal quality and maturity. The study found that preharvest factors such as crop load and canopy position significantly influenced peach quality and maturity, showing the potential for NIRS adaptation across the tree fruit supply chain.

Sandra Munera et al.

Summary: Loquat fruit is economically important in certain regions of Spain, but is prone to mechanical damage and physiological disorders. Hyperspectral imaging using VIS and NIR was successful in distinguishing between external and internal defects in loquat cv. 'Algerie', with the XGBoost classifier outperforming the RF classifier with success rates ranging from 95.9% to 97.5% in different classification approaches.

Hyperspectral characteristics of bruised tomatoes as affected by drop height and fruit size

Ye Sun et al.

Summary: Bruising is the most common damage during postharvest handling and is difficult to detect visually. Hyperspectral imaging technology was used to detect bruised tomatoes caused by falls, with fruit size having the greatest impact on spectral features. Scanning electron microscopy showed that drop tests affected the internal cell structure of tomatoes, with the most severe damage in large tomatoes dropped from 1 meter. Partial least squares discriminant analysis models achieved an overall classification accuracy of 90.93%, confirming that hyperspectral technology can classify tomato bruise damage.

Evaluation of physiological properties and texture traits of durian pulp using near-infrared spectra of the pulp and intact fruit

Phalanon Onsawai et al.

Summary: This study investigated the feasibility of predicting physiological and texture properties of 'Monthong' durian non-destructively using Fourier transform near-infrared spectroscopy. The results showed that scanning the pulp of durian could provide rough screening capability for internal quality evaluation, with only dry matter content reasonably predicted by scanning the intact fruit. This finding could be useful for trade between durian agriculturalists and exporters, as well as for industries producing frozen durian pulp and intact durian fruit for export.

Non-destructive and fast method of mapping the distribution of the soluble solids content and pH in kiwifruit using object rotation near-infrared hyperspectral imaging approach

Te Ma et al.

Summary: This study proposed a non-destructive and fast approach to visualize the soluble solids content (SSC) and acidity (pH) of whole kiwifruit using push-broom-type NIR hyperspectral imaging and sample rotation. Key wavelengths were extracted to construct calibration models, resulting in high prediction accuracy for both SSC and pH. The proposed method showed a promising potential for non-destructive prediction mapping of SSC and pH in kiwifruit or other cylindrical samples, surpassing earlier works in the field.
