Electrospun Beads-on-the-String Nanoproducts: Preparation and Drug Delivery Application

Wei Chen et al.

Summary: The nanoproducts prepared by electrospinning have attracted increasing attention in the field of current drug delivery systems due to their large specific surface area, adjustable porosity, and controllable structure. This review focuses on the specific electrospun nanoproduct called beads-on-the-string nanofibers, which can effectively encapsulate model drugs to provide sustained release and reduce initial burst release. The composite structure of the beads-on-the-string nanofibers also enables modulation of the release properties of drugs in drug delivery systems. The review summarizes the current research on the preparation of beads-on-the-string nanofibers and their application in drug delivery, as well as discussing the future challenges and opportunities.

Adsorption, and controlled release of doxorubicin from cellulose acetate/polyurethane/multi-walled carbon nanotubes composite nanofibers

Reza Alisani et al.

Summary: In this study, cellulose acetate-based composite nanofibers containing poly (epsilon-caprolactone diol), poly (tetramethylene ether) glycol-polyurethane, and multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CA/PCL-Diol/PTMG-PU/MWCNTs) were prepared and investigated for their adsorption/release properties of doxorubicin (DOX). The results showed that the composite nanofibers exhibited better sustained drug release profiles and synergistic effects on cell death against LNCaP prostate cancer cells.

Magnetic bioactive glasses/Cisplatin loaded-chitosan (CS)-grafted- poly (ε-caprolactone) nanofibers against bone cancer treatment

Zahra Amini et al.

Summary: Bioactive glasses and magnetic bioactive glasses doped with Cisplatin were incorporated into chitosan-grafted-poly(epsilon-caprolactone) nanofibers for controlled drug release, resulting in accelerated release at lower pH and higher temperature conditions. The optimal concentration for killing MG-63 osteosarcoma cells was found to be 100 μg/mL of nanofibers. Future research may focus on the application of these nanofibers as implantable devices for bone cancer therapy.

He Lv et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel hybrid material with coating of acyclovir crystalline nanoparticles on acyclovir-polyacrylonitrile composites was fabricated using modified coaxial electrospinning. The developed nanohybrids showed advantages in modifying acyclovir release profiles, with the initial release amount being more accurately controlled and the sustained release closer to zero-order kinetic process. Adjusting the sheath fluid flow rate also allowed for easy allocation of release amounts at different stages.
