Additive manufacturing of biomimetic Titanium-Tantalum lattices for biomedical implant applications

Nicolas Soro et al.

Summary: In this study, 3D lattices designed with gyroid, diamond, and Schwarz primitive minimal surfaces are fabricated using laser powder-bed fusion and a blend of titanium-tantalum powder. The processability, compressive mechanical properties, and in vitro biological properties of the dense and lattice samples are evaluated. The results show that the Ti-25Ta lattices exhibit higher ductility and absence of toxic elements compared to the conventional Ti-6Al-4V alloy. The designs also demonstrate advantageous mechanical properties and higher elastic admissible strains for bone implants compared to conventional lattices.

Current trends, applications, and challenges of coatings on additive manufacturing based biopolymers: A state of art review

Shrutika Sharma et al.

Summary: The healing of bone fractures relies heavily on the compatibility, stability, degradability, functionality, and shelf-life of biomaterials. Metallic biomaterials offer good mechanical properties and biocompatibility, but come with issues like stress shielding and corrosion. Polymer materials are being explored for bone implants due to their lightweight and biocompatible nature, but additive manufacturing has made it possible to create customized implants with minimal waste. However, polymer implants lack in terms of mechanical strength and biological properties.
