Purification and characterization of an enzyme that degrades polyamide 4 into gamma-aminobutyric acid oligomers from Pseudoxanthomonas sp. TN-N1

Yurika Sasanami et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel PA4-degrading microorganism named Pseudoxanthomonas sp. TN-N1 was isolated and an enzyme capable of hydrolyzing the amide bonds of PA4 was purified from its culture medium supernatant. The enzyme exhibited optimal PA4-degrading activity at specific temperature and pH conditions and was significantly inhibited by EDTA treatment. This research provides valuable insights into the mechanism of PA4 degradation by microorganisms.

Novel glycerol-based polymerized flame retardants with combined phosphorus structures for preparation of high performance unsaturated polyester resin composites

Fukai Chu et al.

Summary: Due to the ineffective flame retardant efficiency and compatibility of traditional flame retardants, it is challenging to prepare unsaturated polyester resin (UPR) composites with excellent flame retardant properties. In this research, novel glycerol-based polymeric flame retardants were synthesized and their effects on flame retardancy efficiency of UPR composites were investigated. Among the different structures, PCH(3)PG and PBPG exhibited better flame retardant efficiency, while POPG was more conducive to improving char formation at high temperatures. The polymeric glycerol-based flame retardants also showed good compatibility with the UPR matrix.

Polyamide 6 microplastics facilitate methane production during anaerobic digestion of waste activated sludge

Hongbo Chen et al.

Summary: The study identifies the key role of Polyamide 6 (PA6) microplastics in enhancing methane production during anaerobic digestion, with a significant increase in methane production due to the presence of caprolactam (CPL). PA6 has a less toxic effect compared to other microplastics on waste activated sludge (WAS) anaerobic digestion, and it promotes key enzyme activities leading to increased methane production potential and volatile solids destruction.

Bo-Wen Liu et al.

Summary: Semi-aromatic polyamides (SaPAs) combining the advantages of aliphatic and aromatic polyamides have received increasing attention in both academia and industry. This study designed and synthesized four SaPAs with fluorenyl pendent and different aliphatic spacers, and investigated their comprehensive properties. The results showed that the SaPAs exhibited enhanced performance compared to commercially available products, with changes in properties such as glass transition temperature, thermal stability, solubility, and mechanical strength based on the pendent and spacer composition.

High-performance polyamides with engineered disorder

Nicolas Candau et al.

Summary: The unique properties of biological materials come from their hierarchical structure and control of order and disorder at different length scales. Applying these concepts to synthetic polymers can lead to lightweight materials with high stiffness, strength, and toughness. By introducing aliphatic substitutional defects and generating microstructural disorder while maintaining or increasing macroscopic crystallinity, it is possible to increase chain extension and improve tensile toughness in polyamides.
