Influence of binder float length on the out-of-plane and axial impact performance of 3D woven composites

Calvin Ralph et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that modifying binder float-length in 3D-woven carbon/epoxy composites significantly affects impact energy absorption, impact resistance, and damage tolerance. Higher float lengths were found to decrease energy absorption in the warp direction, but increase crush force efficiency and specific energy absorption in axial impact tests. The research concludes that minor changes in preform parameters can greatly alter the impact performance of 3D-woven composites without increasing manufacturing cost or complexity.

A novel approach to assessing yarn/matrix (or yarn/yarn) in situ interfacial strength in 3D woven composites

Ruijian Sun et al.

Summary: A novel in situ experimental-numerical approach combining meso-scale Digital Image Correlation (DIC) and a cohesive zone model (CZM) is proposed for assessing the in situ interfacial strength of 3D woven composites. The study successfully validated the accuracy of the simulation model and discussed the effects of interfacial parameters on strength through specially designed specimens and meso-scale DIC experiments.

Tensile properties and failure mechanism of 3D woven composites containing holes of different geometries

Qiwei Guo et al.

Summary: This study investigated the open-hole tension properties and failure processes of 3D woven composite plates with different hole shapes through experiments and FE modeling. It was found that the hole shape significantly influenced the strain distributions, but had no perceptible effect on the OHT strength. The stress concentration factor of the circular hole was 36% higher than the racetrack and square holes.

A comparison study on the impact failure behavior of laminate and woven composites with consideration of strain rate effect and impact attitude

Chunlin Du et al.

Summary: This study investigates the performance differences of laminated and woven composite panels under impact by establishing high-fidelity finite element models. The results show that woven panels have better impact resistance, while laminates are more prone to delamination.
