Biocomposites based on natural fibers and polymers: A review on properties and potential applications

Mahmuda Akter et al.

Summary: The growing awareness of socioeconomic and environmental issues has led to efforts in developing innovative, environmentally friendly materials. Biocomposites derived from natural resources have shown potential in replacing synthetic petroleum-based composites, offering properties comparable to synthetic fiber composites while being biodegradable and recyclable. Natural fibers like glass and carbon fiber are low-cost, lightweight, renewable alternatives. However, there are challenges in the manufacturing process of natural fiber-based biocomposites, such as poor adhesive propensity and low fire resistance. This review provides insight into different aspects of biocomposites based on natural fibers and polymers, paving the way for future research.

A super-toughened poly(lactic acid)-based thermoplastic vulcanizate through incorporating modified SiO2 nanoparticles

Zhou Gong et al.

Summary: This study aims to enhance the stiffness and toughness of poly(lactic acid)/natural rubber thermoplastic vulcanizate (TPV) by incorporating modified SiO2 nanoparticles. The modified SiO2 nanoparticles uniformly disperse in the interface, resulting in improved strength of the natural rubber phase and enhanced interfacial compatibility of the TPV. The addition of low content of SiO2 nanoparticles improves the toughness of the TPV while maintaining its tensile strength. The co-continuous PLA/NR/SiO2@TEPST TPVs show potential for application in the 3D printing field.

Super Tough Polylactic Acid Plasticized with Epoxidized Soybean Oil Methyl Ester for Flexible Food Packaging

Arkadiusz Zych et al.

Summary: The research team developed flexible PLA materials by plasticizing them with renewable and biodegradable epoxidized soybean oil methyl ester, achieving elongations at break of nearly 800%. The lubricating effect of the plasticizer allowed for more sustainable extrusion at a low temperature of 140 degrees C, preventing PLA degradation and saving energy in the process. Plasticized films also produced less acoustic noise during handling, which is important for food packaging applications.

Summary: The addition of natural rubber to a polylactide matrix did not significantly impact the water absorption of fibers, with a slight increase in melt flow rate observed. Fiber samples from all compositions retained the propensity for photo- and hydrolytic degradation after degradation in distilled water and UV irradiation.

Highly toughened blends of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and natural rubber (NR) for FDM-based 3D printing applications: The effect of composition and infill pattern

Imre Fekete et al.

Summary: The study investigated the suitability of natural rubber toughened PLA blends for additive manufacturing applications, finding that the presence of NR effectively enhanced the ductility of PLA filaments. However, this improvement depended greatly on the infill pattern used, with specimens prepared using the 3DPAR infill showing excellent deformability when paired with NR. Moreover, the Charpy impact tests indicated outstanding impact resistance of NR-toughened 3DPAR specimens compared to 3DGRID types.

Influence of the lemongrass powder and polybutylene succinate on the properties of biocomposite films based on poly (lactic acid)

M. Chaiphut et al.

Summary: This research developed biocomposite films based on PLA, PBS, and lemongrass powder to study the influences of PBS and LE on the physical and mechanical properties. The addition of PBS increased the tensile strength and %elongation of biocomposite films, while increasing the amount of LE decreased these properties. The color of the biocomposite films with lemongrass powder showed a yellow-green shade, and the UV-light resistance properties improved with the addition of LE.
