Socioeconomic position and SARS-CoV-2 infections: seroepidemiological findings from a German nationwide dynamic cohort

Jens Hoebel et al.

Summary: The study found that adults with lower education levels had a 1.87 times higher risk of SARS-CoV-2 infection compared to highly educated adults, while the relationship between income differences and infection was weaker. The results suggest that addressing social determinants is essential to promoting health equity during the pandemic and beyond.

SARS-CoV-2 Aerosol Transmission Indoors: A Closer Look at Viral Load, Infectivity, the Effectiveness of Preventive Measures and a Simple Approach for Practical Recommendations

Martin Kriegel et al.

Summary: This study shows that infection of COVID-19 is only possible when the viral load exceeds 10(8) viral copies/mL. Mathematical modeling and assumptions can be used to simplify the calculation of parameters related to infection prevention, such as the maximum number of people and the person-related virus-free air supply flow. The study also concludes that testing contributes the most to the joint protective effect, along with wearing masks and increasing ventilation.

Aerosol emission from playing wind instruments and related COVID-19 infection risk during music performance

Carl Firle et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has restricted music activities, and this study assessed the risk of wind instrument playing in various situations. The research found that wind instrument playing produced higher aerosol emissions compared to speaking or breathing. There were no significant differences between instrumental groups, but there was high interindividual variance.

Extended Lifetime of Respiratory Droplets in a Turbulent Vapor Puff and Its Implications on Airborne Disease Transmission

Kai Leong Chong et al.

Summary: The study found that in high humidity environments, the lifetime of small particles in respiratory droplets is significantly extended, allowing them to be transported much further by turbulent eddies. These findings provide insight into optimizing indoor ventilation and humidity control strategies and are crucial for mitigating the COVID-19 pandemic in the current autumn and upcoming winter.

Comparing aerosol concentrations and particle size distributions generated by singing, speaking and breathing

Florence K. A. Gregson et al.

Summary: This study measured aerosols from singing, speaking, and breathing in a cohort of 25 professional singers, finding that singing produces aerosols at a factor of 1.5 to 3.4 more than speaking. Guidelines for musical performances should focus on factors such as loudness, duration, number of participants, and environment, rather than vocalization type.

Probable airborne transmission of SARS-CoV-2 in a poorly ventilated restaurant

Yuguo Li et al.

Summary: By analyzing a COVID-19 outbreak in a restaurant in Guangzhou, China, the study assessed the possibility of airborne transmission of the virus and characterized the associated environmental conditions. The findings suggest that airborne transmission of the SARS-CoV-2 virus is possible in crowded spaces with a ventilation rate of 1 L/s per person.

A guideline to limit indoor airborne transmission of COVID-19

Martin Z. Bazant et al.

Summary: The importance of airborne transmission of COVID-19 is widely recognized, but there is currently no safety guideline proposed. The suggestion is to set an upper limit on cumulative exposure time in indoor spaces, which depends on factors such as ventilation and air filtration rates, room dimensions, breathing rate, respiratory activity, and face mask use.

Aerosol emission in professional singing of classical music

Dirk Muerbe et al.

Summary: This study measured aerosol emission rates from professional singers during singing compared to breathing and speaking under cleanroom conditions. Singing showed significantly higher emission rates, attributed to higher sound pressure levels, with enhancements between 4.0 and 99.5. Furthermore, vocal loudness had significant effects on emission rates, while no significant differences were found between voice classifications. The study supports the need for improved risk management in cases of potential aerogenic virus transmission, particularly in choir singing settings.
