A simplified homogenization model applied to viscoelastic behavior of cortical bone at ultrasonic frequencies

Reidmen Arostica et al.

Summary: This study investigates the viscoelastic behavior of cortical bone at ultrasonic frequencies using homogenized tensors. The results show that the attenuation of cortical bone is proportional to the square of the frequency, and the material filling the pores contributes significantly to the attenuation.

Decreasing hip fracture rates among older adults in Chile, 2001-2019

Juan Cristobal Ormeno et al.

Summary: The study aimed to analyze the trends in hip fracture rates in people aged 65 years and older in Chile from 2001 to 2019. The findings showed a significant decrease in age-standardized incidence rates for both genders over the study period. The incidence of osteoporotic hip fractures has been decreasing annually and significantly in Chile since 2001, with both men and women experiencing a decline in rates. Further research is recommended to understand all factors contributing to this change.

Quantitative Sound Speed Imaging of Cortical Bone and Soft Tissue: Results From Observational Data Sets

Jonathan Fincke et al.

Summary: This study presents ultrasonic sound speed images of limb cross-sections containing soft tissue and bone using Full Waveform Inversion (FWI) with level set (LS) and travel time regularization. The accuracy of sound speed estimation for bone and soft tissue is within 10% and 1% of ground truth estimates, respectively. The potential of delivering volumetric operator independent tissue property images of limbs with non-ionizing and portable hardware platforms is demonstrated.

Improvement of Patient Classification Using Feature Selection Applied to Bidirectional Axial Transmission

Diego Miranda et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis is a global problem related to fragility fractures. Current methods for detecting fracture risk have limitations, so researchers propose using ultrasound features and clinical parameters together to improve patient classification accuracy. The results show that using recursive feature elimination and support vector machine methods, the classification accuracy reached 71% with 22 ultrasound and clinical features.

Summary: The study found that cortical speed of sound (cSOS) reflects the mineralization and microporosity of cortical bone, rather than bone mass. Elderly women typically have lower cSOS than young adults, and many dialysis patients show low cSOS levels associated with higher intact parathyroid hormone levels.

MRI-Based Quantitative Osteoporosis Imaging at the Spine and Femur

Nico Sollmann et al.

Summary: Osteoporosis, a prevalent systemic skeletal disease, can lead to fragility fractures, with DXA being the clinical reference standard. MRI methods play a vital role in investigating the etiology, treatment, and fracture risk associated with osteoporosis, particularly at critical sites like the spine and proximal femur. Advanced imaging techniques such as QSM, UTE, MRS, and CSE-MRI aid in a more accurate assessment of bone quality, aiding in the differentiation of osteoporotic vs. pathologic fractures.

Discriminating value of HR-pQCT for fractures in women with similar FRAX scores: A substudy of the FRISBEE cohort

S. I. Cappelle et al.

Summary: HR-pQCT measurements, including densities, microarchitecture, and biomechanical properties, provide added value in predicting fractures, especially in women matched for their baseline FRAX scores. Low distal bone density is significantly associated with fracture risk, demonstrating the potential benefit of HR-pQCT measurements in fracture prevention.

Fragility fracture discriminative ability of radius quantitative ultrasound: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Y. Fu et al.

Summary: Radius quantitative ultrasound (QUS) shows potential in fracture risk evaluation, especially for women, with an increased risk of fractures when the radial speed of sound (SOS) per standard deviation (SD) decreases. In remote areas with limited availability of dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA), QUS can serve as an effective tool for assessing fracture risk.

Increased tissue-level storage modulus and hardness with age in male cortical bone and its association with decreased fracture toughness*

Robert C. Singleton et al.

Summary: The incidence of bone fractures increases with age due to declining bone quantity and quality. In males, the age-related decline in fracture toughness of cortical bone is characterized by increased stiffness and hardness with age, while viscoelasticity remains constant. The changes in tissue-level characteristics, such as mineralization, contribute to decreased fracture toughness in male cortical bone.

In vivo pulse-echo measurement of apparent broadband attenuation and Q factor in cortical bone: a preliminary study

Jean-Gabriel Minonzio et al.

Summary: Quantitative ultrasound methods have been used to assess cortical bone health by measuring parameters like cortical thickness and ultrasonic attenuation. In this study, in vivo measurement of ultrasonic attenuation in cortical bone was conducted using a broadband transducer. The results suggest that ultrasonic attenuation values are correlated to cortical bone volumetric bone mineral density and may be useful for assessing bone health in combination with other QUS methods.
