Monkeypox: A Comprehensive Review

Harapan Harapan et al.

Summary: The multi-country monkeypox outbreak in humans in 2022 has added a new public health challenge on top of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic. The disease has spread to 104 countries across six continents, with North America and Europe being the most affected. The monkeypox virus (MPXV) has been known since 1959 and has been reported to be virulent among humans since the 1970s, primarily in endemic countries in West and Central Africa. However, the disease has re-emerged at an unprecedented rate in 2022, raising concerns about its human-to-human transmission and community spread in non-endemic regions. It is crucial for healthcare workers, public health policymakers, and the general public to be well-informed about this neglected viral disease. This comprehensive overview provides information on the epidemiology, etiology, pathogenesis, clinical features, diagnosis, and management of monkeypox. It also discusses preventive and control measures, the latest vaccine developments, and future research areas for this re-emerging viral disease that has been declared a public health emergency of international concern.

Assessing Healthcare Workers' Knowledge and Their Confidence in the Diagnosis and Management of Human Monkeypox: A Cross-Sectional Study in a Middle Eastern Country

Malik Sallam et al.

Summary: This study aimed to assess the knowledge and confidence of healthcare workers in Jordan regarding human monkeypox (HMPX) and their attitudes towards emerging virus infections from a conspiracy point of view. The results showed a lack of knowledge about HMPX among healthcare workers and low confidence in diagnosing and managing the disease. Additionally, some healthcare workers held beliefs linking the spread of the disease to male homosexuals. These findings highlight the urgent need to raise awareness about the disease and take appropriate measures to prevent stigma and discrimination among at-risk groups.

When a Neglected Tropical Disease Goes Global: Knowledge, Attitudes and Practices of Italian Physicians towards Monkeypox, Preliminary Results

Matteo Ricco et al.

Summary: This study investigated the knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) of Italian medical professionals regarding monkeypox (MPX). The results showed that there were significant knowledge gaps and a lack of risk perception among the participants. However, a majority of them were in favor of using variola vaccine to prevent MPX, and previous vaccination against seasonal influenza and willingness to receive variola vaccine were identified as the main factors influencing their attitude.

Measuring the impact of COVID-19 vaccine misinformation on vaccination intent in the UK and USA

Sahil Loomba et al.

Summary: Recent online misinformation about COVID-19 vaccines has been found to decrease intent to vaccinate among adults in the UK and the USA, particularly among those who were initially willing to get vaccinated. Certain sociodemographic groups are more negatively impacted by misinformation, and scientifically-sounding misinformation has a stronger effect on reducing vaccination intent.

Measuring voluntary and policy-induced social distancing behavior during the COVID-19 pandemic

Youpei Yan et al.

Summary: Research found that stay-at-home orders and voluntary responses to local COVID-19 cases and deaths led to behavioral changes, but the effects varied among different counties. Policies can accelerate responses and help reduce the spread of the pandemic, but they may also displace voluntary responses.

Behavioural nudges increase COVID-19 vaccinations

Hengchen Dai et al.

Summary: Enhancing vaccine uptake is crucial for public health, and effective communication strategies are necessary to overcome vaccine hesitancy. This study conducted two randomized controlled trials to test the impact of behavioral interventions on COVID-19 vaccine uptake, showing that text-based reminders can significantly increase vaccination rates, especially when designed to give participants ownership over the vaccine.

Airborne transmission of respiratory viruses

Chia C. Wang et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed critical knowledge gaps in our understanding of traditional respiratory virus transmission pathways, highlighting the need for updates. Improved understanding of aerosol transmission through studies of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection calls for a reassessment of major transmission pathways for other respiratory viruses, enabling better control measures to reduce airborne transmission.

Summary: Personal voluntary stay-at-home behavior and policy mandates are crucial in controlling the spread of COVID-19. Research has found that stay-at-home orders and voluntary responses to local outbreaks have led to behavioral changes that reduce the likelihood of transmission.
