The EU Biodiversity Strategy for 2030: Opportunities and challenges on the path towards biodiversity recovery

V Hermoso et al.

Summary: The EU has committed to ambitious biodiversity recovery plans, but past policies have lacked coordination, sufficient funding, effective management, and stakeholder participation. Future conservation efforts should focus on expanding and managing protected areas, exploring new funding opportunities, and enhancing co-governance while addressing conflicts and inconsistencies across sectors.

Estimating somatic growth of fishes from maximum age or maturity

Rainer Froese

Summary: This study presents two new data-limited methods for estimating growth parameters of species. Traditional methods are unable to accurately estimate growth parameters due to difficulties in aging individuals. The new methods use information such as maximum length, length or age at maturation, and maximum age to estimate growth, and the results align with established methods. These methods are applicable to species with indeterminate growth, such as fishes and invertebrates, and have been successfully used to estimate growth parameters for 110 fish species.

Length-Weight Relationships of 52 Species from the South of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea)

Fabio Falsone et al.

Summary: This study provides the Length-Weight relationships (LWRs) of 52 species off the Southern Sicily, and compares them with previous research. The results show discrepancies with the LWRs reported in previous studies. These findings are important for filling the knowledge gap of fish populations in the area and assisting future stock assessment studies.

Filling in data gaps on the phaeton dragonet [Synchiropus phaeton (Gunther, 1861)]: a study on biological characteristics in the eastern Mediterranean (Aegean Sea, Greece)

Georgios Vagenas et al.

Summary: The main objective of this work is to provide information on the age and growth, gonadal maturity, and feeding habits of the phaeton dragonet in the eastern Mediterranean. The phaeton dragonet is a demersal fish species with limited information available. The study found that the species exhibited negative allometric growth and increasing sex-related gonad growth with each reproductive stage. The main food items in its stomach contents were Crustacea and Polychaeta, classifying it as an omnivore with a preference for animal material. Although the data were derived from a single sampling, this study contributes to filling knowledge gaps in the biology of this species.

Age and growth of pompano, Trachinotus ovatus, from the Strait of Messina (central Mediterranean Sea)

Danilo Malara et al.

Summary: This study provides detailed information on the age and growth of Trachinotus ovatus, finding that otolith readings are more reliable than vertebrae readings for age estimation. The von Bertalanffy model was found to best fit the length-at-age data, indicating a relatively fast growth rate and estimated longevity of five to seven years for this species. These findings could be valuable for management and stock assessment studies of T ovatus in the Mediterranean Sea.

Batoid Abundances, Spatial Distribution, and Life History Traits in the Strait of Sicily (Central Mediterranean Sea): Bridging a Knowledge Gap through Three Decades of Survey

Michele Luca Geraci et al.

Summary: Batoid species, including rays, stingrays, and sawfish, are sensitive to fishing due to their slow growth rate and late maturity, requiring adequate management. A study focusing on the Strait of Sicily in the Mediterranean presents abundance data and some life history traits of batoids, showing slight recovery in biomass trends. Protection measures are recommended to safeguard these species in the investigated area.

Identifying Priorities for the Protection of Deep Mediterranean Sea Ecosystems Through an Integrated Approach

Emanuela Fanelli et al.

Summary: The benthic habitats of the deep Mediterranean Sea are facing increasing threats from human pressures, including fisheries, pollution, littering, oil and gas exploration, and climate change. International frameworks exist for the protection of deep-sea ecosystems, but there are challenges in identifying areas needing protection and implementing effective conservation measures. By comparing different analyses, priority areas for conservation in the deep Mediterranean Sea can be identified based on ecological relevance, connectivity, and the level of anthropogenic impacts. The results provide a strategy for ecosystem-based conservation in the deep Mediterranean Sea.

Blue growth and blue justice: Ten risks and solutions for the ocean economy

Nathan James Bennett et al.

Summary: As the ocean is seen as a new frontier for economic development, there are substantial risks for people and the environment, including issues of dispossession, pollution, impact on livelihoods, marginalization of women, human rights abuses, and exclusion from governance. The dominant discourse of blue growth needs to shift towards a more inclusive and just ocean economy that addresses the 10 identified risks of social injustice.
