Skin microbiome alters attractiveness to Anopheles mosquitoes

Alicia Showering et al.

Summary: This study found that the variation in attractiveness of individuals to mosquitoes is related to the composition of the skin microbiota, particularly specific bacterial groups and metabolic pathways. These findings could improve odour-baited traps and other vector control tools.

Larval habitat determines the bacterial and fungal microbiota of the mosquito vector Aedes aegypti

Karima Zouache et al.

Summary: There is higher similarity in bacterial and fungal community structure between Aedes aegypti larvae and the water in which they develop than between larvae from different breeding sites. The larval habitat is a major factor driving microbial composition in mosquito larvae.

Prevalence and Molecular Determinants of Antimicrobial Resistance in Clinical Isolates of Staphylococcus haemolyticus from India

Meerabai Manoharan et al.

Summary: The study revealed high resistance rates of Staphylococcus haemolyticus to several antibiotics, with cefoxitin resistance being the most common phenotype. The majority of cefoxitin-resistant isolates carried the mecA gene, while the dfrG gene was only found in a small percentage of co-trimoxazole-resistant isolates.

Bacilus cereus: Epidemiology, Virulence Factors, and Host-Pathogen Interactions

Daniel Enosi Tuipulotu et al.

Summary: Bacillus cereus, a toxin-producing bacterium, is an important yet often neglected human pathogen causing food poisoning. Its toxins like hemolysin BL and nonhemolytic enterotoxin play a crucial role in the disease, by inducing potassium efflux and activating inflammasomes leading to pyroptosis. Understanding the biology, epidemiology, and pathogenesis of B. cereus is crucial for potential new research directions in the field.

Recent advances in understanding tick and rickettsiae interactions

Shahid Karim et al.

Summary: Ticks are hematophagous arthropods that digest host blood meal with unique molecular mechanisms while acting as vectors for various pathogens. The pharmacologically active saliva of ticks plays a crucial role in modulating the host's immune system for several days to weeks, depending on the tick species. Understanding the interactions between ticks, rickettsiae, and hosts is essential for preventing tick-borne diseases.

Overabundance of Asaia and Serratia Bacteria Is Associated with Deltamethrin Insecticide Susceptibility in Anopheles coluzzii from Agboville, Cote d'Ivoire

Bethanie Pelloquin et al.

Summary: Insecticide resistance is widespread among mosquito species, with evidence of a connection between mosquito microbiota and resistance. Resistant mosquitoes showed enriched insecticide-degrading bacteria, while susceptible mosquitoes had reduced microbial diversity. This highlights the potential for identifying novel microbial markers for surveillance of insecticide resistance.

Mechanical transmission of SARS-CoV-2 by house flies

Velmurugan Balaraman et al.

Summary: The study showed that under laboratory conditions, house flies can acquire and retain infectious SARS-CoV-2 for up to 24 hours post-exposure, and can mechanically transmit SARS-CoV-2 genomic RNA to the surrounding environment up to 24 hours post-exposure, although no infectious virus was recovered from these samples. Additional studies are needed to determine if house fly transmission occurs naturally and the potential public health implications of such events.

Comprehensive Ecological and Geographic Characterization of Eukaryotic and Prokaryotic Microbiomes in African Anopheles

Eugeni Belda Cuesta et al.

Summary: Exposure to a wide range of eukaryotic and prokaryotic microbes in their microbiomes may have influenced the evolution of the innate immune system in mosquitoes. A novel approach was used to analyze the eukaryotic microbiome of Anopheles larvae from Kenya, Burkina Faso, and Republic of Guinea. The Anopheles microbiome contains a high proportion of novel eukaryotic taxa, with Ophryocystis being a widespread genus in larvae from East and West Africa. Additionally, genetic differences in An. coluzzii colonies influence their prokaryotic microbiome profiles, suggesting a host genetic influence on microbiome composition.

Indole Derivatives Obtained from Egyptian Enterobacter sp. Soil Isolates Exhibit Antivirulence Activities against Uropathogenic Proteus mirabilis

Mai A. Amer et al.

Summary: Proteus mirabilis is a common cause of catheter associated urinary tract infections, with increasing antibiotic resistance prompting the search for new treatment options. Extracts from Enterobacter sp. isolated from Egyptian soil samples showed potent antivirulence activity against P. mirabilis, particularly in antagonizing biofilm activity. The study highlights the potential of using these extracts as promising antivirulence agents against P. mirabilis uropathogens and as a potential therapy for UTIs.

Cheese and cheese infusions: ecological traps for mosquitoes and spotted wing Drosophila

Daniel A. H. Peach et al.

Summary: Our study demonstrates that microbial metabolites associated with cheese attract mosquito females seeking hosts and oviposition sites, and are likely toxic to mosquito larvae. These microbes and their metabolites could potentially be used for both attraction and control tactics against mosquitoes in an "attract & kill" strategy. The use of unconventional nutritional media as microbe-based ecological traps shows promise in exploiting insect ecology for insect control.
