Anemia in tuberculosis cases: A biomarker of severity?

Edson Beyker de Mendonca et al.

Summary: This study investigated the prevalence of anemia in tuberculosis patients in Brazil and its association with patient characteristics. The results showed that anemia was present in 61.2% of the 258 cases, predominantly as normochromic normocytic anemia. Anemia was associated with factors such as a history of weight loss, hospitalizations, coinfection with HIV, increased platelet count, and microcytosis, suggesting it could be a biomarker of tuberculosis severity.
