Abiotic stress responses in plants

Huiming Zhang et al.

Summary: Plants face abiotic stresses like drought, salinity, and extreme temperatures, which greatly impact their distribution, growth, and crop productivity. Recent research has revealed the complex molecular mechanisms involved in plants' responses to these stresses, including sensing, signaling, transcription, translation, and post-translational modifications. This knowledge can be utilized to enhance crop resilience and sustainability through genetic, chemical, and microbial approaches.

Inactivation of a wheat protein kinase gene confers broad-spectrum resistance to rust fungi

Ning Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, a wheat receptor-like cytoplasmic kinase gene TaPsIPK1 that confers susceptibility to stripe rust was identified and characterized. Disruption of TaPsIPK1 gene in wheat resulted in broad-spectrum resistance against stripe rust.

F-box protein MdAMR1L1 regulates ascorbate biosynthesis in apple by modulating GDP-mannose pyrophosphorylase

Songya Ma et al.

Summary: This study revealed that the regulation of ascorbate levels in apple fruit is negatively associated with MdAMR1L1, which promotes the degradation of MdGMP1 to inhibit ascorbate synthesis. Additionally, MdERF98 was found to directly regulate the transcription of MdGMP1 to promote ascorbate synthesis. These findings provide insights into the regulatory mechanisms of ascorbate biosynthesis in apples and potential opportunities for improving fruit ascorbate levels.

Apple B-box protein BBX37 regulates jasmonic acid mediated cold tolerance through the JAZ-BBX37-ICE1-CBF pathway and undergoes MIEL1-mediated ubiquitination and degradation

Jian-Ping An et al.

Summary: In apple, a novel B-box protein MdBBX37 positively regulates JA-mediated cold-stress resistance by activating the transcription of MdCBF1 and MdCBF4 and enhancing the transcriptional activity of MdICE1 on MdCBF1. Furthermore, two JA signaling repressors, MdJAZ1 and MdJAZ2, negatively regulate JA-mediated cold tolerance by interacting with MdBBX37. E3 ligase MdMIEL1 reduces MdBBX37-improved cold resistance through ubiquitination and degradation of MdBBX37 protein.

MdFRK2-mediated sugar metabolism accelerates cellulose accumulation in apple and poplar

Jing Su et al.

Summary: Overexpression of MdFRK2 in apple and poplar resulted in increased cellulose levels by promoting UDP-glucose formation and cleavage of sucrose for cellulose synthesis. This study suggests that regulating sugar metabolism as a whole could be a strategy to enhance cellulose production.
