A genetic module at one locus in rice protects chloroplasts to enhance thermotolerance

Hai Zhang et al.

Summary: The study identified two genes, TT3.1 and TT3.2, that enhance rice thermotolerance by facilitating the communication between the plasma membrane and chloroplasts. They found that upon heat stress, TT3.1 translocates to endosomes where it ubiquitinates TT3.2 for degradation, implying its role as a potential thermosensor. The accumulation of mature TT3.2 proteins in chloroplasts is crucial for protecting thylakoids from heat stress.

A super pan-genomic landscape of rice

Lianguang Shang et al.

Summary: By studying the pan-genomes of large natural populations, we can uncover the genetic diversity and complexity of rice. We have created a super pan-genome of rice using long-read assembly and identified extensive structural variations and gene presence/absence variations. Additionally, we have discovered genetic variants associated with various traits in rice and identified a common set of genes that have played a role in adaptation and domestication in Asian and African rice.

Agricultural diversification in West Africa: an archaeobotanical study of the site of Sadia (Dogon Country, Mali)

Louis Champion et al.

Summary: This research aims to fill the gap in the history of African agriculture by studying archaeological samples from Mali and discovering the evolution of agriculture and foodways in West Africa. Along with pearl millet, sorghum, African rice, fonio, and barnyard millet/hungry rice were found in the samples, indicating a diversification of crops in West Africa starting from the tenth century AD.
