Uncovering New Insights and Misconceptions on the Effectiveness of Phosphate Solubilizing Rhizobacteria in Plants: A Meta-Analysis

Summary: This review introduces the mechanisms of how plants facilitate P-uptake and illustrates how phosphate solubilizing bacteria (PSB) improve the bioavailability of phosphorous nutrients. The effectiveness of PSB on increasing plant biomass and P-uptake is assessed using meta-analysis. It is found that improved P-uptake does not always result in improved plant height and biomass. The commonly reported species for P-solubilization are outperformed by scarcely implemented Burkholderia spp. The meta-analysis also challenges the belief that PSB are less effective under field conditions compared to greenhouse conditions.

The phosphate desorption rate in soil limits phosphorus bioavailability to crops

Summary: This study reveals that the phosphorus desorption rate plays a crucial role in limiting P bioavailability for fast growing plants with a small effective root area, especially under negative soil P balances. Soil P mining reduces phosphate desorption, impacting the diffusive flux of P and ultimately affecting plant growth and P demand rates. Additionally, the study highlights the differences in available P requirements between maize and wheat, with maize requiring over three times more available P in soil due to higher P demand rates per unit root area.

Summary: Upland rice production on acid, weathered soils is often constrained by phosphorus deficiency and aluminum toxicity. Application of farmyard manure (FYM) can significantly enhance yields and agronomic phosphorus fertilizer efficiency under such abiotic stresses. Different rice genotypes exhibit variations in aluminum tolerance and the use of organic phosphorus, providing distinct benefits under combinations of TSP and FYM.
